Ive looked through the tutorials and I cant find an answer to this question. I have used several different skirt templates with the same results, except for once and I dont remember how I did it. At first the mini skirts had a slit up the left back of the skirt to the waist (which was turning into shorts) now I made the skirts shorter and dont have the problem with the slit but I still have the problem of my skirts turning into shorts. Also I get sox bottoms (feet bottoms) with my shorts. Cant figure that out either. I tried to attach a photo but somethings wrong with the server. Im successful with shirts though!

:) sounds like it one of the settings in the inbuild editor for an item defind as 'skirt'.
When you choose to create a new item the editor allow for a string of options that are all item-specific. eg you can not create a 'slit' in an item defined as a jacket, but as you have seen, you can create a slit in an item defined as a skirt.
These 'items' are in fact in-build objects that can be textured by the user / owner of the object. The variations are different configurations of set object.
This is both the strenght and weakness of sl clothing, it is what makes it simple to work with but also the reason that the variations are limited, hence creating an unwanted uniformity of the palette.
Experiment with the editor options for both stockings and skirts.
If the problem is more conplext that that, i think you need to post a picture
