Matching Edges

OK, I'm stupid! LOL!!

I am having the worst time matching up the edges
with Chipp's templates.

I'm trying to make a little crop top and the bottom
edges and the sleeve edges are always just a little off.

Is there a trick to this or do I just have to practice a lot.

Thanks so much for any tips.

The thing is, the scale of the fabric on the top and on the bottom are a little off. This isn't a problem from Chip's work, but rather a fault in how the LL mapping of the textures works. Chip's template gives you a pretty good idea how much the difference is, and where it needs to streach or compress a bit to make it match.

You may want to try a texture with a regular pattern on it, like a gingham check, to get used to how to adjust scales. But be aware that such textures usually look TERRIBLE on an avatar. The texture mesh on clothes distorts a lot, and regularly repeating patterns make the distortions very hard to ignore.

The other trick --- everybody does this -- is to upload the templates to SL and use them as textures for making yourself a full body suit. Study it carefully in world to see how the pieces match up across seam lines. TAKE LOADS of pictures and save them on your hard drive to study later. It really helps.

Also, with making sleeve edges and hemlines, it really helps to rough them out with a copy if chip's template, grid and all, that has the intended sleve edge or hem drawn on it as a line. Then you can see if this distorts, by wearing that texture as a shirt, dress, or whatever it is intended to be, and examining it in-world. Adjust the position of the line as needed to get a good edge.

For example, in designing a 'crop top', a shirt with a bare midriff, you would think you could just draw a straight line across the texture and crop it off. But distortions on the avatar mesh make that a jagged edge, especially if the slider settings for the clothing item are set as "loose". You need to compensate for that by making your crop line jagged in the other direction. Looking at a 'template suit' with the template grid on the item of clothing really does help a lot in determining how to compensate for the really bad texture mapping.
