I have a widescreen monitor and when I take snapshot they are all compressed on the horizontal - how do I get around this - I reasile it is some setting or something?

Your screen resolution needs to be adjusted to the proportions of your monitor. On my wide-screen, I'm using 1440 X 900 pixels. There ought to be a software control for your video card that you can tweak. Check also to be sure that you haven't accidentally changed the aspect ratio for photos in SL. You can see that when you open the snapshot control panel (Shift-Ctrl-S).

For snapshots you upload instantly, there is not simple solution. All textures must be measurable in powers of two. You can't take a snapshot of a 1440x900 view, and expect it to remain that size upon upload. Ordinarily, it would get rounded to 1024x512, but with snapshots in particular, SL tries to keep them square, and often tries to cap them at 512x512.
There are two ways to work around this. One would be to size your SL window to 512x512 to begin with, but that's probably not something you want to do. The better alternative is to save your snapshots to disk instead of uploading them instantly. Then you can open them in your paint program of choice (Photoshop, PSP, GIMP, etc.) and resize them to acceptable numbers.
See the sticky on texture sizes at the top of the forum for more info on what numbers work.

Thanks, Chosen. I forgot that you can choose instant upload. I always save to disk. That way I can crop and retouch them easily.
