Eyelash Problem.

I just made a bunch of new make-up for my skins with extremely heavy eyeliner, and everything looked great. Then suddenly I see all this "discharge" looking stuff on the eyelashes. Upon further inspection I notice that the eyelashes seem to "hide" and "show" themselves randomly whenever they please in accordance with the skin continually "rezzing" itself. Sometimes the skin can be without the eyelashes for 5 minutes and then suddenly it "rezzes" itself and when its done the eyelashes are there, then they disappear again.

So basically it seems when I made the skins and they looked great it was that I was viewing it when the eyelashes were in "hiding".. whenever the eyelashes show themselves it looks all nasty and tan colored mix with black (Which looks fine if your skin doesnt have eyeliner!).

How do I get rid of this skin color around the eyelashes and why do the lashes randomly go into hiding? (I have the top right hand corner of the skin template to be transparent and created an alpha channel for it)

Here is an attachment, in the left you can see the tan conflict, and on the right is how it should look. Any idea on how to fix this? (Is there like an eyelash "stencil" thing I was supposed to use to do the alpha channel for the top right corner rather than just making the whole thing transparent?)

Most of the clothing/skin templates come with some lil eyelast stencils on them, but they aren't much better than just leaving it transparent. But yeah, you're really supposed to draw your own if you want them to look good. Personally, I've never been able to do eyelashes :)

Why not take the avatar lashes off and do prim lashes? Those look so much better anyway.

Hey Sae <3

Well the lashes are dependent on the shape right? Most men probably will not want to hide the lashes and wear prim ones. And when demoing the skin that wont be a priority of theirs.

Someone told me her female skins have this eyelash problem as well, and the male skins I have also all seem to have this going on. I guess I can just tell consumers for best results to hide the lashes via appearance mode. Thats what im going to do for me. :D

Honestly, if I'm not wearing prim lashes, I tend to be lashless, so I don't think anyone's gonna mind if you just slide the eyelash slider to zero :)
Avatar lashes tend to look so bad, you're really doing people a favor to just tell them to "say no to avatar lashes" XD

Ill do that on my side, but that has nothing to do with the skin right, or does it? I thought the eyelashes had to do with the shape. In otherwords, just because on my avi im lashless, the people who demo the skin may have their lashes showing..

If the skin itself is where the eyelashes operate out of I will definitely put it to 0 defaultly.

/me smacks herself in the head

of course, you're right. The lashes are part of the shape :) I wasn't thinking clearly lol...I'm not even in SL yet for the day.

Now you see, why you are the skin maker and I am not LOL

Ooh oh but you can just not do the lashes at all on your skin
Then they don't have a choice.

haha i wish, theres no way to hide them though. If i remove the alpha channel its just like flesh where the eyelashes *would* be lol

I will just write up a notecard tomorrow saying for best results hide your eyelashes. The eyelashes look fine on my other non-eyeliner skins, though, so no biggie.

Completely hiding the eyelashes is probabbly not possible since SL still crashes if the head_alpha.tga file is messed with. On the other hand, if color issues are what is causing undesired results, bleeding the entire eyelash area with black on the skin layer should eliminate any "flesh" color. It will make the eyelashes look a LOT thicker. Maybe this will help, maybe not.

Eyelash COLOR is determined by skin (template) and eyelash LENGTH is determined by shape (slider)

@Nam- I tried removing the alpha channel I had and coloring the eyelash area with black, it just made them turn from lashes, to a solid black piece.

@Sylvia, so how do I turn my lashes black? Currently they are black mixed with a tan which I guess is the default color as my whole upper right hand corner is transparent.

I was thinking if I find the "eyelash stencil" maybe that would allow me to see where the eyelashes actually are at, and color them black that way- is that correct? Where can I get the eyelash stencil from? Im using chip midnght template and It didnt have one on it.

Find the folder called character in you SL install and look at head_color.tga and head_alpha.tga. This will show you the lashes "stencil".

I am not an expert at this and I don't know what is causing your problem. My understanding is that the resident made skin is on the tatoo layer, so if you have any alpha transparency, the default skin will be displayed in that area. The default skin is made from the files found in the character folder and modified by the appearance sliders. I have been able to change the lashes from black to brown by simply filling in that corner with my desired color.

Have you tried using the sliders to set your lashes to the shortest length possible with your solid black piece?

Thanks I found it and used that alpha and then colored black in that area in the layers are. It looked better at first but after my skin did that "rez" thing it went back to mega-ugly. Oh well.

No but this route will only fix the problem on my end, I want the actual skin to look good for anyone regardless of what their eyelashes are set to.

I set my eyelash length to 0 and i still see eyelashes.

I tried some other skins I own and I see the lashes too, it looks almost like they are drawn onto the skin itself but it`s not.

The eyelashes have their own little bit of the mesh. You can see that they stick out when you look at the head from the side if they are set long enough.

I understand that you have a business and you have a high standard of quality for your products and that is a good thing.

'Tis a pity. I spent many hours making a realistic skin from photos. I know it has its flaws, but I love how it looks and I love wearing it. I simply can't get that level of realism and beauty in the eyelashes or the eyelids, for that matter. After a time I simply don't "see" the eyelashes, my brain filters them out of my consciousness. We are all in the same eyelash boat. If I were you, I would include a notecard saying, for best results, set your eyelash length to 0 and include it with your demo skin and your customers can decide if they are willing to do that or if they even care that the eyelashes are not perfect.

I didnt realize the problem was "normal" and so widespread. I`ll just leave it alone, I tried a few things and I still see the problem regardless, I dont think theres anything to fix it.

Ty for your help <3

Yeah, you can't completely eliminate the eylashes, not without hacking the client. Have you tried 100% transparent on the tattoo layer, 100% transparent on the head_color.tga layer and setting your skin pigmentation to 100%, ruddiness to zero, and rainbow to zero?
