I downloaded a bunch of patterns for PS6 (.pat files). Put them in presets -> patterns folder. But they are not showing up in the program when I want to use them.

Does anyone know where I went wrong?

You probably just need to load the patterns. It's not enough just to put them in the folder; you have to tell Photoshop you want to use them.

Photoshop 6 is like seven years old now, so these instructions may be a little off, but I think this should work:
  1. Open any image file (or create a new one).

  2. Select any tool that can use patterns. The Paint Bucket is as good a place as any.

  3. In the tool settings bar at the top of the screen, locate the drapdown menu that toggles the tool settings between foreground mode and pattern mode. Set it to pattern mode (foreground mode is default), and the pattern dropdown box should appear just to the right of the word "Pattern".

  4. Click on the down arrow to expand the dropdown box, and then click on the little right-facing arrow button on the right hand side of the box. On the menu that pops up, select "Load Patterns". You should now be able to navigate to all your .pat files and load them.

I hope that helps. As I said, PS6 is pretty old. I think the process has remained the same all this time, but there is a chance it could have been different back then.

TY Chosen that got me where I need to be.

Yeah I know its old but I just can't afford to upgrade. PS 6 is still better than alot of the alternatives even if it is old ;)
