I am very new to clothing design, and have spent most of my focus previously on furniture and such. While I was excited when I finally figured out alphas, the thrill was short-lived. There are so many well-established designers (clothing, furniture, buildings...you name it) that the cost of uploading files barely seems worthwhile if I can't offset it with some resonable amount of sales. Does anyone have advice to offer on how to gain some exposure on a relatively limited Linden budget?

Aww don't be discouraged.

Send me an IM InWorld and you can be the first new talent to get a prime front area location in the Avalon Mall.

We can also set you up with a small 6x6 booth with vendors on Galleria Skywalk.

The only way to make a break into SL is to be given a break :)

Stay motivated Noelle, help is all around you :)

Don't give up. I felt the same way when I started out. I remember when I could only make t-shirts and I was looking at Chip's stuff thinking...omg I suck lol. I've come a really long way and doing things I never thought I could do. I won't lie to you and say that you'll make your way overnight but don't let that bring you down. Yes we may all be *competing* for buisness, but you'll find that the clothing designers of SL are some of the most willing to help.

I'm always spending money on everyone else's clothing lol. I keep an eye out for new designers with talent because I like to help when I can. We dragged Starley into Umber after seeing her clothing lol.

Just take your time, do the best you can, and get in where you can fit in. You'll be able to look back as you move forward and be proud of where you stand.

I know how you feel. Maybe we should start a new designers support group or something. At least that way we can get to know people that are going though the same thing as us. :)

With so many designers/builders now its harder and harder.. But stick with it cause alot do not.

For clothiers my last count of people who sold more than 10 clothing items is at 39. So thats alot of clothes with more all the time. Funny thing its only 11 of them are men.

Go figure.

I started my clothing store, FLATORA over a month ago... but the only reason people started knowing about it was because of a few things I had done.

1. It was on my own land... so i hosted a GRAND OPENING event.

2. About a few days after the grand opening, I had a 1000L$ gift certificate raffle.

3. I spread my store to a lot of locations all around SL.

I had previous experience with having advertising trouble like you did. I have an avatar buisness as well... and for it to be noticed took a long time... 3 months to be exact. Now a lot of people know about it.

It just takes time.... dont worry, in the long run everything will work out. :D

Hope this helps,

David

getting any business started up in SL can be difficult these days. I think the most important things.. just like r/l are location, (put it somewhere east to get to), client base (weve got thousands of people willing to shell out L for clothes so youre covered), and advertisement (events, word of mouth, freebies all that good marketing jazz).

And remember, unless you *really* want the hassle of a second virtual job... just have fun and do the things you like doing and it will all come together.
or as a Dewars scotch ad once told me "do what you love the rest will come"
