You know, Ace of Clubs, Six of Hearts, that kind of thing. I've been commissioned to make a casino game, and I'm really not interested in making and uploading 52 card textures...

Thanks so much!

Hi all... there must be a cheap/free set of playing card textures available...? Can someone please point me in the right direction?

A quick google search just turned up this nice image. It' free under GNU. Not sure how the owner would feel about you using it as part of a commissioned build, so you might want to send them a quick E-mail to ask. I would assume whatever you want to do with it is cool though, since the main page says "You can use it everywhere you like : Web pages, games, the GNOME desktop, the KDE desktop, and so on..."
I would suggest resizing it to a width of 1024. That will give you a height of 572, which won't be real clean when SL resizes again to 512, so I'd suggest next increasing the canvas height (not the image height) to 768. Then upload to SL and use repeats/offsets to make 52 individual cards. I would strongly recommend against making 52 individual textures. It's always better to use a texture sheet. This a good example of how a concept like sheeting applies both in and out of SL, by the way. 3D modeling is 3D modeling and resource management is resource management. _____________________

I really was hoping to avoid doing it myself, since I'm really a coder and not much of an "arteest". That said, I tried your idea of uploading this sheet and setting the repeats and offest. What a pain in the BUTT! I'd rather upload 52 seperate textures, to be honest. UGH! That said, I'm still looking for pointers in game if anyone has already done this work... I know someone has, as I see cards in the game all the time... Thanks! Adman |

Playing card build or textures...
03-19-2006 00:40
Hi all... I'm writing a casino game for someone, and would like to buy/borrow/steal some playing card textures (you know, Ace of Clubs, Six of Hearts)...
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I *could* do it myself, but at this point, I'd really rather not reinvent the wheel. Thanks! Adman |

In this case it's really better to use one big texture sheet - you don't want to have some cards loaded and some not, that's very frustrating for players and we all know how reliably texture loading works in SL.
If you are a coder it should be easy for you to figure out how to set the offsets (you only need to set repeats once) with some algorithm - the texture Chosen pointed to is all nicely ordered etc (perhaps use a separate sheet for jokers and back side) _____________________

I just played around with this myself, and due to SL's rounding issues, unfortunately the arrangement of the cards in that picture is not practical. Sorry about that. I'll explain.
Since the configuration is 13 cards wide, you need a horizontal repeat of 0.77, which SL insists on rounding to .08. At .08, it doesn't look good, too much border. Still, I'd caution against using 52 seperate textures. A better sheet configuration would be the way to go. As Candide said, use 52 textures and you WILL run into situations where some cards rez for people right away while other cards take forever. The experience will be different for each person every time. For this reason and others, sheeting is always best for things like this. So, here's the procedure you should follow. This works; I tested:
I tested this by roughly cutting the cards out and moving them around the page to make the 10x6 configuration. If you want to play with it, the UUID is 580b83ff-a657-4a44-d8a7-6b9b74885747. I didn't have time to do cleanup work, so some of the borders don't look all that great. If you do it yourself, I'm sure you'll want to make it cleaner. Just follow the procedure I outlined (more carefully than I did) and it will work just great. No "arteestry" required, beyond resizing, cutting, pasting, moving, and occasionally panting over any lines that didn't get cut cleanly. If you don't want to worry about cleaning up the lines, just erase them altogether. The cards might look better without a border anyway. _____________________

However, I got it to work perfectly using your UUID referenced above. I might just leave it at that... Thanks again for your help! Adman |

Just noticed this was cross posted. Just so everyone knows, this was already resloved on the texture forum.

Looks like this has been merged, but moved to Design and Textures for your convenience
