Hi Lisbeth!
You can't set things so that they have no permissions. They have to have either Copy or Transfer. However, you're on the right track, because if any portion of the thing has No Copy (or No Transfer,) then the entire thing also is No Copy (or No Transfer.) So, to make a skin with those permissions, all you need to do is set the skin to No Copy, and the texture to No Transfer. However, whether or not that's a good idea is another question. If you leave the skin as Copy, No Transfer, then people can make "Outfits" that include that skin. It's a little thing, but it's a convenience that your customers might appreciate. (And if it's already No Mod, No Transfer, then it's not like they can abuse it somehow. Or is there something that I'm missing?) _____________________

Thanks Robin
![]() I think I will put a notecard in the box telling customer if she wants transfer instead of copy, she can contact me and I'll exchange the skin for her. Lis |

I think I will put a notecard in the box telling customer if she wants transfer instead of copy, she can contact me and I'll exchange the skin for her. They won't be able to exchange the skin (it's no transfer... so can't be given back to you!) so you'd have to trust that they delete the copyable version. Up to you if you want to risk that. The easiest way to deal with gift versions is to sell on SLBoutique or SLExchange, both offer a 'buy for friend' option. Or stick a poster in your store instructing them to IM you before they buy if they want a transferrable one. _____________________

No copy or No transfer
04-03-2006 05:15
This brings up a question that I have had for a couple of weeks. I just opened a clothing store and would like to ask the more experienced owners, which is better in selling, no copy or no transfer?
I have seen both in clothing stores. In some you can copy and others you can only transfer. What are your reasons for setting your stuff no transfer or no copy? For both store owners and non-owners. As a consumer, which do you prefer in clothing? And why? Jen |

Most of the clothes I own are Transfer, No Copy. Copiable makes it easy to make multiple outfits, sure, but so few things (that I buy) are copiable that, to be honest it's less of an advantage than it sounds.
Transferable is nice, it means I can buy for my partner as a present and give her the gift on the day rather than hoping I can get onto SLEx or SLB and make the payment to have it delivered. It also means I can put the stuff into a nice box if it's a special day, although that's probably less relevant for a "Oh, she'd like that" sort of random token of affection gift. That said I just got a lousy review on SLEx because someone can't read. Something I sell is clearly marked as Copy, Modify and No Tranfer - the complaint "I bought it for myself and it's NT" (I kid you not). Obviously there are some out there that want it transferable over copy (and may also need to learn to read the information before their eyes). I don't think there is a "right" or "wrong" answer to the situation - but for my money transferable is preferable to copy for clothes and things. Vehicles, it's an entirely different story! |

Thanks Cailyn - it's obvious I'm very sleepy ![]() Thanks everyone for great advices! Lis Both are viable options. For my "natural skins" i usually offer single skin versions that are "can transfer / no copy" and for the packaged skins i use "can copy / no transfer". It would not be too clever to offer a 10 skin package with transferable skins as people keep the one they like and have 9 spare to give away. Distar |

In my opinion, the final decision comes down to two choices and two reasons: Either your customers want the ability to change the color of the item (ie, mod and copy but no transfer) or they want to be able to give to friends or alts (transfer, no copy).
If you give them transfer and copy, I think you risk the possibility that someone else will sell your items and take credit. Trans + mod is less risky but I'd have to be convinced that someone had a valid reason to want both. In my experience, it's a very welcome change to buy skins which are moddable and I accept the fact that I can't give them to friends/alts. However, I'm disappointed that there are so many skins on the market which are no mod AND no trans. I don't see a real reason for that other than paranoia. ![]() I received a gift certificate not long ago from a major SL store, and to fill it I had to make a list of items from that store, send the notecard to the store owner and have them fill it by hand. Great idea, but a major pain for the merchant AND for me. No thanks! I'm building inventory now for my first store, and I don't plan to offer more of my own time than necessary to help folks with special gift orders. So for me, it'll probably be either no-copy/trans or mod/no-trans. I like the idea of offering the same item with both settings for those gift occasions. _____________________

I have some things one way, and some the other in my store.
Some of the older things are Mod/No Copy/Transfer, but I'm starting to think that it might be better to have things that are Mod as copyable, too, because that way people can modify a copy, and leave a pristine "backup." So all the new hair is Mod/Copy/No Transfer. There have been a couple of people who didn't notice it was No Transfer before they bought it, but most people seem to keep an eye open for that, and if they want to buy it for someone else, ask me to drop it on that person. What we really need is the ability to sell things in "Gift Boxes." A box that is transferable, but needs to be Activated somehow to remove the contents, and, once Activated, is no longer transferable. I have no idea if that's possible, since I'm not really a scripter, but it would be a wonderful thing to have, and would solve all kinds of problems. Just my 2ยข. ![]() _____________________

Great minds Robin! I was thinking about that just earlier today. I think it's possible to set up an email server (JEVN or similar) to do it... I'd have to play and I don't have a network vendor system to hand so it would be build from scratch, but it should be doable. Not for a few weeks though!

i highly recommend you set clothing to transfer. so many of my customers buy something for themselves and a friend while their at it. In nearly a year of business i had my first customer say he wanted copy/ no transfer. A year! However, I get Ims all the time to confirm stuff is transferable for shoppers purchasing a gift. In my personal experience, Transfer is the way to go to keep majority of clients happy.
good luck ![]() _____________________
