It all depends what your familiar with or used to or are more comfortable using..

The main three are Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, and Gimp

I think most people would agree Adobe Photoshop has the best tools etc.. But its most expencive too, from what I can see..

PaintShop Pro is probably the most widly used one, and is probably the easiest to learn how to use..

And Gimp is free.. Thats about all I know about it lol...

Any program that can use Pdf and TGA files can be used I think..

Anyway thats my view on things :)

Welcome to SL and congrats on your first post :)

Here's a quick synopsis of the three most popular image editing programs:

1. Photoshop is the industry standard in image editing, the most powerful of the three programs, and has more tutorial information written for it that just about any program in the world, so the arguments for it are pretty self evident.

2. GIMP is almost as powerful as Photoshop, can be modified with the GIMPshop plugin so that most Photoshop tutorials will work with it, and it's totally free, so it makes perfect sense as a logical alternative for those who don't want to spend the money on Photoshop.

3. PSP on the other hand isn't as powerful as either of the others, and it costs a hundred bucks. I won't call it a bad program; it works, but I don't really understand why anyone buys it. If one is not gonna get the best, how does it possibly make sense to spend money on the third best when the second best is free? I just don't get it.

For those who are already used to PSP for whatever reason, then it makes some sense to keep on using it (although proficiency with Photoshop is a very marketable skill). However, for someone just getting into it, I simply can't see any advantage to actively choosing PSP over the other two.

So, Ellit, what I'd recommend first is that you get the GIMPshop plugin if GIMP is going to be your program of choice. Second, go to the downloads section of this site and get the Fashion Design Help Guide. Read it, and then come back with any specific questions you have.

By the way, I'm not sure why PDF was twice mentioned in this thread. The standard format for working image files is PSD, not PDF, which is why that's the format of the templats. It's true that Photoshop can import certain PDF files, but it's absolutely not a format you want to use for image editing. Besides, it's not at all usable with SL. The help guide is in PDF format but that's as far as PDF's relevance goes here.

I just made my first one, my own unique tattoo only I can show (unless someone else finds the way to make one identical, that is)

I used photoshop, and if you haven't, I suggest you to download the avatar patterns in the download section of the SL site: they're really useful when it comes to place the tat in the correct place, and it comes dith a PDF file with some help and hints about making clothes ans tatoos.
