My friend uses gimp and is teaching me how to do animated textures. I am still trying to figure this out and often I find I can create the image but still not quite able to get it exactly right because of programing difference, etc. I use adobe photoshop CS version 8.0 She said how she made the white area that will be seen in the animations in gimp is Filter -> LightingEffects -> Lighting What is the translation to this in the program I use? Anyone else making animated textures that can share some advise. This is recent. Issue is also even when I use her scripts it doesn't turn out how it should. I am making 2 different texture items look like they are coming alive. Here is successful attempt image of this with my friends help with my texture work that she tweaked.

have never used Gimp .. However looking at the image you posted it would appear to be an "emboss" effect .. combined with Alpha ..( at least thats the way I percieve it ). In SL there is no way to upload an animated texture directly .. Texture animation is achieved by combining all the "cell" frames into one image and using a script to "show" the diffrent parts of the image in sequence. My advice .. ( and also how I do it ) .. Create your normal Gif89 "film strip" in Photoshop .. ... keeping to the usuall x2 rule . 64x64 .. 128x128 etc.. ( smaller the better for good frame rates ) then use this great utillity app .. http://www.peregrinesalon.com/anim/ point the "Browse" option at the Gif on your HDD .. Enter a frame rate .. Hit the "Process" button .. Voila .. a script will be created ready to copy/paste into your object .. and a link to the converted .TGA file ready to upload to SL.. Happy Animatin' !! )

The effect your friend is using in GIMP automagically makes a shiny light in your image. It gives a menu of lots of options, color, type or light, position, et cetera.
i don't know what the PS equivalent is, but if you keep looking, I bet it is in there.
I know this might seem like a stupid question, but are we talking about the fence, or the little firefly thingie?

the fence looking thing in the light is pinstripe wall paper base I made with preset shapes and some tweaking in Inkscape. The starshape thing is distortion experiments my friend did to it. The lighting on wall doesn't show the image with face that pulsates in and out that we are experimenting for haunted house. Friend called it "Bump" image or something I don't remember if its right word. Not all video cards show it though from what she said. I am not using gif images or files. I am doing 16 or less images on One 1024 by 1024 transparent png file then using scripts that friend is providing or tweaks for me because I can only do the art end of this project. The image pulsates like something is trying to escape from the haunted walls when properly scripted. I did use emboss for this effect but we haven't animated thought maybe there was something else I might be missing. I didn't really know what I was doing then, still really don't just experimenting.

The Bump map/image you mention in SL for the moment purely an inbuilt preset .. and it is true that some old/low end graphic cards can't render them ..
Howerver we have no option for the moment to upload a custom bump map .. ..so your texture is purely that .. a standard graphic image that all cards that can run SL will be able to render regardless of the "Enable Bump mapping and shiny" setting in preferences.
