I have read different opinions on this and am wondering, does repeating a texture contribute significantly to lag? Say I want to repeat a 5 pixel pattern 100 times on a 10m x 10m face, is it better to upload a 5x5 pixel pattern and repeat it on the prim or should make a 500x500 pixel texture that already has the repeating pattern on it?

Neither. :D

You want to keep your textures to "powers of 2," so you want to make your texture 8x8 pixels. However, depending on the texture, I'd be inclined to upload at 64x64. Smaller sizes get quite blurry, if there is tonal contrast in the texture.

But yes, you want to upload small, and repeat. It will rez much faster than a large texture, and cause much less lag, since it will reside in the cache as a much smaller file.

"Upload small and repeat", great, that is what my intuition said to do. Thanks

And thanks also for the powers of 2 tip.

Have a great second life.

Can SL textures go down to 8x8? I'd thought 32x32 was the minimum size.

8*8 to 2048*2048

From: someone

Note: Uploading textures less than 8x8 pixels may give an error:
