I am having major problems trying to make Kimono sleeves. When I use prims, they attach and look really weird. Is there any sort of way to do it with just a texture or something as clothing? Does anyone know anything that can be done to get the hanging sleeves?

If you find a way to do it, you'll have lots of customers. Seriously! All the Kimono outfits that I have seen in SL have settled for a compromise on the sleves. Most use tubular sleeves that are standard Sl sleves made as loose as they go, and the better quality ones also have a 'glove' inside that, just covering the arm, and not the hand, to represent the inner robe layer. The standard Sl clothing just doesn't suport the traditional Kimino sleeve structure. And as you noted, prims just don't cut it, for something that has to be attached to moving arms. I can't imagine an acceptable way to do it with prims. Even if you could script the prims to obey gravity and always hang downward from the arm, there is no way to get the parts to fit right on the arm. It would not join right at the shoulder or elbow. Perhaps there is a way to do it with particles? I've seen wings that are done with particles, so... maybe?

I was afraid of this as I have looked at all of the Kimono in SL and seen that none of the sleeves have the traditional look. I am going to look into the particle thing. For a Kimono, the sleeves looking right is quite important, so hopefully there is some way around this that no one has thought up yet.

Yes. SL does a lot of things wonderfully, but clothing still has some severe limitations. It's all part of the trade-offs between playability (in terms of how powerful your computer has to be to play here) and visual appeal.
It would be amazing if they could start to import poser-style clothing meshes, where, like the Avatars, the clothes have a mesh of their own, and not just the limited set that SL offers now. Or if they could offer dynamic cloth and hair, like in Poser 6. But neither is likely any time soon, as animating that in real-time 3D is too resource intensive.
If you ever do find a better way to do Kimono sleves, please IM me in-world, or send me an e-mail through the forums. My household in SL is largely influenced by late Edo Period Japan, so my Companion and I wear Kimonos a lot!
