Hi recently I've been attampting to make semi transparent items in the gimp bur for some reason it jsut wont work it goes completly transparent or not transparent at all.

use color to alpha and choose a color half way btween like if you want to make white 50% use grey ect...

The easiest way to do this is with a layer mask, which you're probably using. Just in case, the way to do that is to pop open the Layers tab, right-click your work layer, and select "Add Layer Mask." Once you have a mask, select any option that's useful to you. If you want to physically alter the mask, as you may here, the best way to do that is to left-click the image of the mask in the Layers tab (should be to the right of the work layer). You may also want to right-click and "Show Layer Mask" when doing this. Once you have all that, you should be able to just color the mask gray and presto! Half alpha.
