Here's a crazy-simple problem...I think. Making a tat for my left arm (shirt layer)...but upon wearing the shirt, the tat of course appears on both arms, because the template only has one arm. It just shows up on my right arm in reverse.

Any way around this, short of paying my skin maker to do a custom job?

No way around this for doing a tattoo with a shirt. There is only one sleeve on the template and so it gets applied to both arms. You would have to put your tattoo on a prim and attach it to your arm.

even a skin maker can not overcome the fact that we only have one arm to work with in the texture dept.

I appreciate the responses, folks. Interesting to learn that symmetry is imposed upon us by the magical forces of texture economy. No wonder I feel so well-balanced in SL.

There is a pretty easy work-around. Put the tattoo on a transparent background, apply it to a prim, and attach the prim to one arm. The effect can be very convincing.
