Alternative Texturing?

With the newest release of the 1.15.1 (3) client, and following the upgrade, I can no longer texture anything via the texture tab. I have a few hundred textures, but I get the message that there are no textures found in the inventory. (Why oh why can't SL fix something without breaking half a dozen other things - ok, that's for a different post.) I can work around this 'bug' (although it's a real PITA) when working on a prim. What I don't know hwo to do is to work around it when I want to apply fabric (texture) to new clothing. Does anyone know of another way around this?

I tried IMing the NCI group, but that's bugged now too, I keep getting error messages to all groups: Error messaging chat session with New Citizens Inc..
Error making request, please try again later. (although later doesn't help, no change).

I'd appreciate if anyone has a solution I can try. I am learning to make things, and now I can't make anything if I need to texture the clothing.

Thanks!

texture database fix help?

I've talked to several people with empty texture search fields while in "edit" mode, I've heard a solution is to downgrade the previous viewer software, but am unable to find an earlier viewer download... anyone?

A Way Around It

Although it's a royal PITA, I have now learned that you can drag the texture into the fabric box while editing appearance to change the fabric (texture) of the clothes. Hope they get this fixed real soon, but wondering what they'll break to fix it.

I had this same problem...got round it by typing the name of a texture I knew I had in the search box and...bam! It appears. Just delete the text you put in the search box to use your inventory like normal and select any texture you want...it's a ham fisted way of doing it, but it works!

That's one for the quote books. If that's not Second Life in a nutshell, I don't know what is. :D

I sometimes I wonder if SL bug fixes are like Scientist or Doctor messing with DNA if they change one thing there is strong possiblity they create another problem or something very strange like baby with no eyes or arms, etc.

Here is a work-around: Example - I want a texture with "Flagstones" in the name...

Open the texture picker. If it does not show a list of folders and textures, type just ONE letter that is in the texture you are looking for. (Type an "f", for example). It should start to populate the list. If it does not, close the texture picker and reopen it, and try again until it does.

Wait a second, then type the next letter that you know should be there. (It should read "fl" now...) If the list goes blank, backspace and wait a little longer. If the list starts to narrow down on your texture name, continue typing letters to get what you are seeking.

This DOES work, it's just a royal pain. I'm doing a multi-sim build right now and have been doing this since the last server-side roll-out caused this glitch.

Is everyone still having this problem? As of last night, the texture picker is still not working and no mention of fixing it on the blog. It really makes building a pain as I don't always know the name of the texture I want and I can't scroll through them properly.

use the same method previously described....

type the name of a texture you know, then erase it. textures should filter in after that.
they have gone to an 'on demand' type of inventory population

always remember that textures with No Modify permission will not appear in the list to choose

i'm strange I guess I never use the texture picker anymore stopped long ago. I search for it in inventory and open it up and then drag it into the texture window. I think maybe when I first started I used that option but stopped because I seemed to find this dragging method better for my "taste".

I have the same problem and its a total pain in the neck, unless you know the name of the texture you want to use. I will try dragging the texture to the edit page, thanks for the tip.

I don't use search, but then I have evereything in labeled folders. So maybe it is broke only with the search. Didn't think of dragging the texture on. Will have to try that.

I have a related question: I have used a texture on one item and would like to use it on another. I cannot, however, remember the name of the texture. When I edit the original item and go to the texture tab and click on the texture pic, this same message about object not found displays instead of the name/path of the texture. As I have over a thousand textures, I am daunted by the prospect of going through each and every texture to find this one again. Has anyone found an alternative?

And would opening a texture and screenshotting it be the best method of moving that texture to my computer foruse in Gimp? I used this texture on a prim bra and would like to make a non-prim bottom to go with it.

Bugs like this happen.... And yes while its a hassle its a fact of any type of software coding and patching processes that exist. You fix problem A you may create problems B and C even with testing Problem A's fix in a environment like a beta grid.... Without testing it under the same exact environment that exists on the main grid its impossible to tell... When the beta grid only has a few variable factors in comparison to the main grid differences in average load, number of sims online, scripting variables, number of objects and countless other things.

Its impossible to gather entirely what will happen when it hits the main grid they can know what it does in testing but with all the other variable differences different effects on the code that exist may happen. And to those that complain alot about bugs go on the beta grid or use first look and report the bugs that you find..... Thats why they make these things..... And still as i said its impossible to get it 100% right every time unless they loaded the fixes up on the main grid for testing each time and worked them out from there which would create a good deal more bugs....

Use the work around and hope that the next patch fixes things its not that bad with the bug there yes it takes deleting a letter or 2 but is that really that big of a deal?

The texture problem still isn't fixed.... they've had plenty of time to work on it, but too much time is spent on trying to come up with new things - for example voice. I DID go to beta, and crashed every 3 minutes.... kind of discouraging to want to go to beta if you're gonna crash constantly - and it's allegedly not as 'busy' as the main client. Go figure. But, my point is... yes I'm complaining about the texture bug... the other million bugs I'm not complaining about, but since texture is a very IMPORTANT feature, I feel justified in complaining - not that I feel obligated to explain this to you, but basically you're post implies that we don't have a right to complain for not getting good service, unless we put forth the work to help fix what we pay them to fix. I suspect that the bug reports fall on deaf ears.

Now, my question to you... if you go to a restuarant, order a steak medium rare, it gets delivered to you cold, well done, dry...... are you going to accept it based on the fact that you don't know the conditions of the kitchen, you don't know what work is going on back there? Yes, it's just an analogy, but it fits.
