Dragons cost around 2000$L which is about $8 USD so you can either buy linden dollars or if you get the stipend save for a couple of years (basic).
Ive been looking at getting a dragon avatar also but wont be doing so for a few more months as Ive just had a pretty big spend, as for which sim to go to get one I cant rember any off the top of my head but run a search for dragons and you shoul get one come up. I dont think there are any freebie dragons I could be wrong as the size of SL makes theese things possible. Either way good luck in finding one Rotten ICE _____________________

Nick? Do you want to be a Human sized anthro dragon? Or a non-anthro, winged, huge Western dragon?
There are a few decent freebies for a simple anthro dragon, if all you want is a scaly body with a tail, paws, wings, and head like a dragon. Ask around in Serenity Woods. That group of furries used to have a freebie dragon avatar at their store, when they were still in The Forest. Or catch me in-world, and I'll give you one from my collection. For a really good dragon, go to Jakkal's Werehouse in Bruin. She makes a decent anthro dragon, and also a full-prim, fire-breathing monster of a dragon that is quite impressive. You might check in Luskwood. I believe Lost Creatures sells some anthro dragon avatars. There's also a few sims that specialize in RP with dragons, and who sell avatars that are only available in their sims. I've heard they are good, but haven't seen them yet. As someone else stated, well-done dragon avatars require a lot of effort to create, so they tend to be expensive. Expect to spend L$1000 to L$2000 for a good one. _____________________

I dont think there are any freebie dragons I could be wrong as the size of SL makes theese things possible. I believe there is a freebie anthro dragon outside The Forest store. I've also run across it through YadNi's. Human sized anthro dragon avatars usually cost less than the giant dragon avatars like Daryth Kennedy's (http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&MerchantID=2170) or even Jackal's bipedal dragons (http://secondlife.drakkolupen.com/). For human sized dragons check the Forest Store, Jackal's Werehouse, or check Lost Furest for dragon hybrids. *Edit: Ceera beat me, and I can't believe I totally forgot Lusk!  _____________________

Not too sure what, if anything, can be found any more in The Forest. The sim's been completely wiped and is being reconstructed. The vast majority of the residents packed up and moved out, to a newly-created sim of their own, named Serenity Woods.
The last time I was in The Forest, it was mostly barren sand dunes, with a few buildings that the remaining residents, mostly employees of the sim owner, were slowly trying to build. The store there only has a fraction of the merchant vendors that it used to - mostly vendors who were owed time on rental space from prior to the sim deletion. It was such a depressing sight that I haven't been back there since then, not even to remove my first store, which is still there (and that store will be there for months yet, even though it hardly gets any sales now, as I was prepaid many months in advance before the sim was destroyed). _____________________

You also do a search for the Isle of Wyrms. There are both quadraped and biped Dragon avatars for sale there, and a very lively and helpful Dragon community.

I noticed while working Help Island as a mentor that there is a dragon av in the Freebies Store there. While you can't go back to HI one you've left (apart from being a Mentor or other volunteer) perhaps someone could get one of those for you.
