What are your source images for creating paintings?

I'm very new to Second Life and have a question regarding the creation of virtual paintings. While I know how to create the necessary prims for the painting and the border, I'm wondering wht the recommended format and bit-depth the image should be for maximum quality up close.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Okay, I'll elaborate further since I see a lot of views but no replies:

My gut instinct is to create a web image at 72 dpi, but what should the area be for your average painting? For instance, what does a flattened 1 x 1 square need? 100 pixels by 100 pixels? This is the sort of thing I'm getting at.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Hmm, for a painting - the more pixels the better, especially if its a detailed picture. I usually upload my pictures around the size I would for the web, maybe a tad smaller. So usually in the 512 x 512 pixel range. If its really detailed maybe go up to 1024 on the way high end.. but anything beyond that is overkill and would take way too long to load.

Hope that helps...

That's exactly what I was looking for. I will be sure to keep the image quality in the "sweet-spot" range and, of course, will reduce the size as much as I can through optimization. Thanks so much!

i've played with this myself and found that a 512x512 image looks good on a 10x10xn prim.

remember SL will resize to multiples of.. i think it's 12 or 6..

basically, if your going to makea rectangular image you would go with something like 128x256 or 256x512, etc..

and 72dpi is acceptable.. paintings and the such may benifit from a higher resolution though.

Good point to bring up Cybin. SL textures all must be powers of 2 (16,32,64,128.. etc.) So to avoid a lot of distortion when it auto-sizes its best to set up your original image in those dimensions.

For textures the dpi setting is kind of irrelevant. All that matters is the number of pixels. dpi only really comes into play when printing images.

That's good to know. The power of 2 thing will help me. I'll just be sure to think along the pc-math lines and I should be fine.

Thanks to all of you for your help. You'll be hearing more questions from me in the future. This sure is an addicting little life you guys 'n gals got here. :)
