Would there be any support for a group to advocate plain, simple, non-flashy, no-frills interface appearance?

Such a group would oppose things like the "picture dropping away" effect in the 1.11 upcoming version.

I figure the group might be named Plaing Interface Group so it could go by the acronym PIG.

I don't like the photofreeze. It ruins my immersion. But I'm not going to complain against the bullwark that is Linden Lab. It's their world; they can do whatever they please with it.

It would be more fun to have a demonstration at the Welcome Area.

We could wear pig avatars.

Who does one write to in order to get their objection to such stuff seen by the person who needs to see it?

It's not just the flash. The picture-dropping-away effect is both stupid and done very poorly. It looks more like picture droppings that a picture dropping away.

Also I never seem to see picture dropping away effects when I take real pictures.

When you close the snapshot window, indicating you are done taking pictures, it makes your avatar go through the snapshot animation again. Wut?

These gimmicks will ruin picture taking for me; I will just use print screen.

Sigh, a bummer, they can't just give you more power, they have to throw in stupid non-functional gimmicks that give no one more power and which will annoy some.

with alittle rewording maby i, SL's user interface is plain, dull, and sometimes fustrating enugh

I would rather support a group thats focus is making the interface more usable (who hates clicking on the more button, or telling ppl to hit it becuase your gonna use it in edit mode anyways, cleaning up the ui, adding in input boxes for scripts, extending the llDialog ect)

or pushes twards a more advanced ui all together (maby vector based, so when one runs SL in a small window everything doesnt get jumbled together)

but i do argree with you in the fundimental point .. fading menus, flashy animated graphics and other forms of BS are not needed on a modern entertainment platform that has a goal of 15fps for the average user

when i can stand in a full club scene and nail SL for 100+ fps then i wont care if the menus fade or the little gesture icon does a strut..

but untill then its just extra stress on client machines, and IMO a total waste of time for whichever linden is messing with it, since theres so many positive things you can do with the UI without resorting to the same ol lame "fading menus and animated ui" garb thats been done for decades

doesnt matter that wont happen anytime soon ;)

for me SL is running quite happly tho, local lights , ripple water all that crap, @ nci during a full event i average 25fps, but i know im kinda pushing my "old" machine to the edge, a full scale club event with all the fair still drops me back to my 1.3ghz/GF2 days of 0 FPS, eh close enugh 5-8 fps

anyways again i dont need any more BullSh fighting for computer / video memory / power, maby when the old cheap computers are next years top of the line it wouldnt be an issue

till then im on your side, just not in the exact same way

The idea of avoiding visual effects and other useless gimmickry is a separate idea from maximizing usefulness, power and flexibility.

For instance, we have a group menu that lists all the groups we are in. (Right click av, select group). Can we send an IM from right there where we have to go to change groups? No. Adding that would be an interface change that would improve usability. This I would support.

Having the group menu use animated characters with a scrolling border design and pulsing colors and rounded corners would be useless visual fluff which I would oppose.

There is a greater cohesiveness to being opposed to useless, and annoying visual claptrap than there is to suggesting ideas for a more powerful and more useful interface.

There's just so many different ways to go in making the interface easy and powerful at the same time. I'd like to demos instead of just reading the ideas. Semi-functional demos for improved interface ideas would be great.

What would be a good program for making program interface "fakes"?

Let's get rid of all the pleasing visuals. Second Life should be 100% text! We could all just describe the things we have built to one another - it would help expand our imaginations, and would also reduce lag significantly. We'd have to work on the honour system with griefers - for instance, if one said "bang", we would just telnet home. Frogg Marlowe and the rest of the SL musicians would just type out the lyrics to Freebird. Who is with me?

I suppose you are right.

Everyone who doesn't share your exact viewpoints has something wrong with them.

You are perfect in every way, those who disagree with you must have organic brain deficits.

If I don't like the same things you like I must be a bad machine.

Suezanne, what DO you like? You even posted a depressing, negative answer in my "what is right..." thread when I tried to lighten the mood and cheer myself up after reading all the moaning over petty little things. I swear, you and L_____ are either married or alts. When I disagree with something, I usually at least try to have a little fun with it, as above. You? I can hear you sighing from miles away. You're a MOD here! Most places I have been, the mods try to make the forum a better, happier place. Not here! When I mentioned before about how gloomy it was, did you try to point out the good things? No. You directed me to a forum that was even worse.

Congratulations on making people feel welcome.

Suezanne, what DO you like?...

.
The General forum is for discussion and education about Second Life.

You are insulting people - me - and attempting to divert a thread about interface issues into a discussion of other people's personal failings.

If you want to insult me further, do it in forum private messages or send me email to suezanne@gmail.com.

If you have something sensible to say on Second Life's interface, give it.

Perhaps you should consider getting something to eat and a good night's rest.

And to stay on topic, it may be a good idea to propose a feature that could enable and disable the fancy graphics so people could vote on it. Sound productive?
