How does one make money without having any to start with?

Gambling is risky and generally a losing bet (hehe).

I'm willing to work at it, but I'd prefer to stay out of the "Red Light District".

Camping a chair all day may be exciting to some people but I'd need more ritalin for that. Plus you would have to stay at it all day making sure you didn't get kicked off. Sure, I could do that for cab fair, but I'm looding beyond that.

.........
where can one ask n00b questions without being in the game? I work at a slow paced job and have free time to be on the forums, but when i'm in the game (at home) be doing things.

Thanks for any help.

The easiest way is just to buy it on the Lindex. You can get there from the "$" icon at the top of the screen. You can get money in all sorts of ways, selling things mostly, but in practice if you're new you're not very likely to make money quickly enough for you, it takes a while and a lot of effort to get up a decent volume of sales.

If you go premium you get L$500 a week.

Lindex

There isn't much of a market for good paying jobs, so the above is your best bet when starting. But as you go along you might an idea for a need without a product and make millions.

Click on my name and go through my post history. I've posted countless threads specifically for the purpose of helping nOObs hit it big in Secondlife.

Right now there are great opportunities in creating pre-fab homes.

Cresley? Jamie's trolling.

I'd go with the Lindex. Unfortunately, it's difficult to make money if you don't have any: uploading textures costs money, as does renting store space, as does buying land to rent out.

As a note, if you want to sell things and don't have a lot of money, I recommend looking at SLExchange.com, or SLBoutique.com, since you don't have to pay anything to have your items listed there. There are also a few in world malls that don't charge rent; the mall owners simply take a cut of whatever you sell.

Think its a big myth that SL is set up to allow the average person to "earn their own Lindens" a huge number of people come to Second Life with that thought in mind. Thinking its like any of a dozen MMO type games out there.

If someone is just out to socialize a free account + 20-30 $ US in start up money could get an Avatar decently set up (a good Skin, some hair, an AO, a few pairs of shoes and clothes).

Have you given any thought to the Circus?

Seriously, make something really cool and inovative... or if that fails a new and improved penis and sell it. :o

As my father use to always say...
"You gotta have money to make money!"
I have experienced this to be true in life thus far.. at least for me anyways... but luckily in SL it doesn't take so much to get started...

There is a dire shortage of insult comics in SL. I suggest you find the nearest virtual urban area, but a hat on the ground, go Don Rickles on some people's azz. Guaranteed money.

Don't listen to the naysayers. They are just trying to keep a bigger piece of the phenomenal amount of money to be made here in SL.

Think about it - they're making bank, so they dont want more competition. They want the whole pie.

There is huge money to be made in hair, clothing, and pre-fab houses. I personally am entering the pre-fab market and planning on capturing the lion's share of the pie. Come jump in with me!!

Actual gambling is, of course, a great way to LOSE money. But there are a few casinos in SL that periodically offer what is called "Free Slots," meaning that you can play the slot machines as much as you want during the time period (generally 10 minutes or so at a time) for just L$1, and then when you cash out your winnings, you even get that L$1 back.

I haven't done it in ages, but back in my newbie days, there were times that I'd make several hundred L$ in an evening that way.

The place I remember being particularly good for this was Chilly Charlton's "Club Extreme." Don't know how it is these days.

At any rate, welcome to SL!
