First and foremost, if this should be posted in a different forum please direct me to the correct one.

My question is about hair and shoes. I have noticed that the majority of these items (or at least the ones I have acquired since joining) are no transfer. I was just wondering if there was any particular reason that these two items in particular are predominately no transfer?

Thanks & have a great day.

it's because they need to be set Modify OK. The reason being that different AVs will have different head shapes and feet sizes, so peopel must be able to adjust the hair and shoes to fit. Now, if you enable modify rights on an item, it's a good idea to also allow the owner to Copy it as well, that way they can make backups in case the mess up their first try.

If something is set to Copy OK, creators will turn transfer off so that someone can't buy one copy and then begin to sell it as their own.

Clothing doesn't have this issue because it automatically fits any avatar shape since it is just a texture. So copy rights are usually turned off and transfer is allowed. There's actually quite a bit of debate over which is better (Copy OK, Mod OK, Trans NO or Copy NO, Mod NO, Trans OK) which is why some stores will have both available.

Personally, I like having backups of everything as well as modifying what I get to better personalize it, so I sit firmly in the Copy/Mod/No-Trans camp. But that's for antoher thread.

I actually prefer hair (and related items such as skin and eyes) that's copy/no-transfer, because then I can use it easily with multiple outfits. Clothes, that's not so important, because I only tend to use any given item of clothing in one outfit anyway.

Modify isn't as important, but I sure wouldn't try modifying an item that was no-copy...I'd want to have a backup in case I completely fark it up.

Thank you both for responding. Now that you mention it, the reasons for no transfer make perfect sense. I'm still learning, thank you for helping me out :)

Typically, anything make of prims...hair, shoes, etc...have to be resized to fit your avatar as no two people are the same shape generally. As such, the item has to be Modify permissions. If you are making an item that needs to be sized and modified, it is very wise to make it copiable..because half the people trying to size it to their shape will mess up, sometmes in a terrible and unfixable way. If its copiable they always have the original to fall back on instead of annoying the creator for a new one (I actually had someone ask me 5 times in ten minutes to send them a new copy of an item they bought because they kept screwing up the original and not making copies even though it was copiable). If its modify and copy...it would be very bad to make it transferrable...because then someone could steal your work.

Since the only reason anything needs to be transferrable is to offer it as a gift to someone else...and since that can be done in other ways just as easily (such as choosing "Send as Gift" from slb or slx websites), and its actually necessary to make prim attachments resizable and copiable...it is a simple choice to choose Mod/Copy over Transfer.

I have seen and even unfortaunetly bought no mod and no copy prim attachments and clothes before without realizing...and nothing sucks worse than to buy something cool that doesn't fit you at all and can't be adjusted to fit. In those cases I not only wasted my money...the creator lost a customer for good since their stuff is all useless to me as it doesn't fit me.

That is why most prim based items in SL are No Transfer.

Good question, and no idea... that bugs me too, as a clothing designer I never make anything no transfer... and Asri doesnt make shoes no transfer... seems to be too much of pain for consumers... although some like it and I have had requests for a "no transfer" version and I will do those if asked.
Although hair is another story, I like to change the texture of my hair to use my own hair texture and I also sometimes need to adjust it and its good to have the original as backup :)
