Opinion on Resale Shop?

I'm a complete and total SL shopaholic, and my inventory tends to be bursting at the seams on a regular basis...especially with clothing. I am still relatively new to SL and I haven't created much on my own, but I have tons of clothing that I have purchased. I was thinking about opening a small resale shop for clothing, but I was wondering how ethical something like that would be? I would be selling other peoples objects.

I know that some objects have "saleable" authority - and there are obviously tons of yard sales all over SL that sell "used" clothes. And in the case of copyable and transferrable objects, you could sell something over and over again. I'm not looking to make a quick buck by selling tons of copies of someone else's stuff!

I'd like to create a shop where I could sell 1 single copy of an outfit, and then have the buyer take it away. How do clothing designers feel about someone reselling their stuff? Honestly, I would prefer to create a store that's classy - I would most likely IM the designer and ask them if they are ok with me reselling one of their works, even if they'd already provided the authority to sell it within the object itself.

What is the prevailing attitude towards resale shops/yard sales in SL? I'd like to sell clothing that I am no longer using, but I don't want to be a thief. I'm trying to get a feel for how ethical a shop like that would be. Opinions?

It sounds to me like you are taking every possible precaution to protect the original creator, i say rock on

As you have described it, that's totally ethical.

Yup it's all good in my mind. I don't believe you even NEED to contact each designer, I wouldn't feel it was necessary. If it's an original sell away!

Yardsales per se have gotton a bad rap because 99.9% of them sell freebies, sucks for those who wish to have a REAL Yardsale.

So my advice is go for a shop or boutique, avoid labeling your creation as a yardsale...which it sounds like you weren't planning to do anyway.

As long as they are transferable items you bought yourself (not freebies), I see no problem with reselling them at all.

Yeah, that would be cool. Set up like a consignment boutique, where you (or maybe other people - I'd love to see a reputable arena for a "yard sale";) can set out displays of the different outfits you'd like to resell. I think you're taking good precautions here, and I'd love to see the idea implemented.

I think approaching the creator is a nice form of diplomacy. If an object is non-transferable, you might be able to work something out with them regarding resale. Just a thought...

If you have managed to get an item that is copyable *and* transferable, contacting the creator to make certain its not a freebie item and that they have corrected the permissions would be an outstanding act of consideration.

If its intended as a freebie, you should not sell it as you most likely never paid for it either. If you want it cleared from your inventory, delete it. Setting out one to 'sell' the original for 0 will still leave a copy in your inventory after all.

If it was never intended as a freebie, set the item to sell original and be very careful to mark next owner perms to either no copy or no trans, whichever the creator intended it to have originally.

Overall, I've never found the money I've recouped to be worth the money that I've had invested either in my own land or in a rental space designated for a yard sale. A freebie space for yard sale items, sure, if it has traffic. Best bet is findingn someone who does it as a business and let them give you a 'bid' on bunches of it and just get rid of it in one fell swoop. I've done this several times, though the last time I looked for my contact, I couldn't find her. Sigh. SL moves on.

I think the prevailing attitude is 'yard sales are cool as long as they're not selling freebies and you keep them off the bloody events calendar.'

I don't sell clothes, but I wouldn't object to my stuff being resold at a yard sale. Yard sales are fun. The problem in SL is that most of the ones I've seen look like ass, are organized like ass, sell stuff that looks like ass, and the managers are asses selling freebies. If you get a good reputable business going there could be a lot of potential. Maybe charge a commission for people to put there own yard sale stuff there after you verify it's legit.

Best of luck!

I know someone who sells second hand merchandise and one of the things she does is, she creates a new display box using photoshop and on the display box she puts the name of the store the item originally came from, it's original price and then the resale price she's charging. And she always sells it for less than she paid.

I think this is fair plus it gives a little advertising to the original store. If a buyer likes the item they know where to look for more like it.

This is excellent feedback - thanks for the input! My goal is to create a reputable and respectable resale shop. And I want to acknowledge the original designers. Allana - thanks for mentioning how you friend handles it. I was thinking of doing something along those same lines. Perfect! That's what I will do.

I'm really not looking to make money on this endeavor. I'm just looking for a way of turning my unused items back into Lindens...so I can go buy more stuff! :-) And it gives me an excuse to do some more interior decorating in the shop!

And I must be completely naive...I never would have thought of selling freebies. What complete choads people must be to do that.

Indeed.....freebie selling is, I think, my biggest pet peeve and disgusting, but not against LL rules.

So I just try to inform and then harass the greedy slobs that do it

Although, if you have freebies you don't use, you can sell them for $0 to n00bs who happen to come across your shop before some freebie place.
