Over on omidyar.net there's the start of a discussion about a 1996 article entitled "Why computer modeling should become a popular hobby." It'd be fun to hear what you think about it. Have we come a long way in ten years? https://www.omidyar.net/group/secondlife/news/8/

Primitive-based modeling without vertex editing? Yuck. I can and have been dealing with it for a while, but I'd really prefer working within polygon limits than primitive limits.
A properly modeled clipper ship with all the riggings and wires can have less polygons than a 30-prim vehicle made of spheres. I'm probably missing a billion technical details, but as far as I know that would be less intensive on sim border crossings than what we have now. Especially with a basic bounding box.
Computer modeling in itself is good because you don't have to deal with smearing paint, ripping decals, or gluey messes and you can play with your creation in a simulation as if it performed at full scale. It's not like you can hop into a plastic 1/24 scale Spitfire model and strafe little pixelated Germans (or dogfight fire-breathing dragons in the process).

A more natural input system would help a great deal. Sensor gloves, maybe the new Nintendo controller, something better than keys and mouse.

From: Verkin Raven It's not like you can hop into a plastic 1/24 scale Spitfire model and strafe little pixelated Germans You can't do that in SL either. Well, Ok, you could.... but you'd have the whole of Neualtenburg ARing you
