the game seems to run very low FPS for me not sure why... Ihave a pretty decent computer... right now i'm at extreme casino staring at the dance floor and FPS is 9-10...

let me give u my comp specs

AMD 64 3200
x700 gfx card (latest drivers)
2.5 gigs of ram
running windows xp

my settings are as follows...

right now i'm running full screen at 1280x1024... I have Ripple water and Disable far Clip checked... avatar rendering is nromal... terrain detail is full...

gfx card memory 256mb
the object/tree/avatar detail are all in the middle
draw distance is 128
fog dist is 2
bumpiness draw distance 10
max particle count 4096
outfit composite limit 5

I can run most games in pretty high settings (i can run BF2 in full quality at this resolution)
same with SWG (star wars galaxies) which has smilar graphics, I can run it in full quality at 1600x1200

is this game that much of a resource hog?

It's not a game. That's the problem. The content is not tightly controlled by a professional development team.
We have the freedom to build whatever we want, and it's very easy to create something that no modern computer will ever render fast enough.
Having said that, the new version 1.9.1 is in preview and has a feature called occlusion culling that will likely make rendering faster :)

It does!!! And man-O-man is it sweet!!! I tried the preview grid, benchmarking my system, and with the shaders turned on (medium setting, high didnt work) and all the local light goodies turned on, I achieved 30-33 FPS at Gibson 147,40,39. Not bad at all! (for SL anyways)

The stuff you'll see in the next update is so cool!!

ok, it's no ProjectOffset or Elderscrolls:Oblivion, but its a big improvement!! :D

Right now SL can get about 13 hectares on 18 litres of kerosene. That's not bad for a system that kept together with duct tape.

Try turning your draw distance down to 64. edit-preferences-adv graphics-draw distance. Turn off ripple water too if it's still slow. Sometimes you can tweak your settings to reduce lag. Everything is streamed so yes, it's quite a resource hog.

"Soon"

You dont really get ETA's (at least not ones that are kept) from any developers , even Lindens :P

Occlusion culling is nice, but as long as 3-4 avatars on your screen with prim hair and jewellry mean 300-400 k extra triangles for your computer to throw around each frame ... it just won't help much ^^;;

Tis is one issue. ATi doens't do OpenGL all tha well. There are some unofficial drivers.. Omega Drivers I believe. They seem to be favored by the ATi-owning residents.

Bump this down to 64. Unless you're flying around, this is still a reasonable draw distance.

Entirely different thing going on here. With a game like BF2, optimizations can be made because the content is fixed. They know what objects and resources will be available in a given map and make adjustments accordingly. However, in SL, since all the content is made by players, only the most general of optimizations can be done.

Now with 1.9.1, there are some good enhancements being implemented. But unfortunately, SL still uses an old graphics engine which doesn't utilize the enhances capabilities of today's graphics cards.

Cutting draw distance down can help run the game faster.

I have discovered how to make SL run smoothly!

Get a T1 line...

It's true! My laptop (turion 64 1.8 ghz with el-crappo shared 128 ati 200m video) ran PERFECTLY last night at Verizon's main Tampa communications center. I was getting a good 20-30 fps (BLAZING for this laptop... and even for my main computer, where I only get 10-15!).

God, it was wonderful...

Now if only I had $1000/month to pay for it ;P

That said... have you tried turning off the avatar vertex program? I find that seems to make the biggest difference...

I second that one. On some ATI cards, the avatar vertex program is a performance killer -- knocks your frame rate in half. There are others, however, where it works well, so you have to try both settings on your system and see which works better. The avatar vertex program seems to help all NVidia cards.

Hmm...

Settings 1 and Settings 2

That's for a laptop with an ATI 200m, but if it works for that, it might work for you :)

Also, I have the Omega drivers... that improved things half again after those settings.

Edit:

Also, your internet speed really DOES seem to make a difference. It's bad enough at my house, with wireless cable (doesn't seem too bad on wired for some reason... though I still get randomly dropped...), but it's horrible lately at any place with DSL. Especially if you're somewhere with lots of crowds/scripts/etc - like a dance floor probably is.

It truely was wonderful at the place with the T1 line. Sigh :/

ADSL has something like an error correction on the last link to your house. And this spoils your ping time by a very significant amount. My ping time is already very high to ll because I am from overseas. But the amount of time I loose in my city allone is about a quarter. Some providers offer to switch it off for gaming, but often it costs an extra to get that and to keep it that way :-(.

Leff.
