Yeah, this post will be long.

Browsing through the forums and seeing all the negativity lately is getting really old and I have decide to make a bit of a statement on my feelings.

What happened to just having fun in SL? Why is it that all I see is people bitching and moaning about whatever they can? I see so many negative things here it really is pathetic. Why are people so totally focused on money money money and how much they can get and why aren't they being reimbursed for things when changes are made. What kind of impression are we giving new people? I for one didn't come into the forums until well after I started SL. To be quite honest, if I would have come into a forum setting such as this when I was new...I would have ran away with a quickness.

Case in point: P2P. Ok so you bought some telehub land and are pissed off because it is supposedly worthless now. To me, land is land no matter where it is and I really don't see why telehub land is so 'useless' anymore. I understand people were making an investment but when you invest in virtual items you take a much greater risk. I would be interested in knowing how much $ each telehub land investor made after they bought/rented the land, funny I don't see anyone offering that information. I'm sure what they made selling items or renting more than paid for their investment. So LL decides to buy back most of this land and people complain. Would you rather LL didn't make any kind of offfer? Some of you I don't think would be happy with any offer. P2P has greatly improved mine and others enjoyment of SL and I am very glad to have it. I have been able to get around much more and buy more and everyone I know has been doing the same.

Now I see that there is discussion of a Creators Union  Is this something we really need here? As far as I know about Unions is that basically as an employee if things don't go your way or you feel 'wronged' you go on strike until things are cleared up. Ok so this to me makes no kind of sense because who exactly do creators work for but themselves? Does this mean if you get mad at LL for whatever reason, that you will just cease creating and hold up prim signs while you picket in front of your store? Will you take down your stores so no one can buy from you? Will you downgrade your tier to nothing and shout "Take that LL!!!" Well I tell ya what, that's pretty lame and there are plenty of people who will take your place. You would only be hurting the ones who have been loyal and buy your product.

I'm also tired of reading about the Bush signs. How many threads do we need on this? I understand the annoyance of seeing them, although I have never ran across one in world but you are only feeding his need to get a rise out of people. The person putting them up is obviously only after attention and money, which he is getting plenty of. If he cared so much about the 'message' he was trying to send, then he wouldn't be doing it while knowing he is aggravating most of the user base. Continually talking about him is only feeding his desire to cause problems while he sits back and laughs.

Some people here need to be thankful for what they have, the friends they have made here, the abilty to have made a bit of rl cash on making virtual items if you own a business. Nothing in SL is ever set in stone, things change, things are upgraded, things are re-written. We all read the TOS, we all agreed to it whether we read it fully or not. We don't technically 'own' anything here. SL could disappear tomorrow and there's really not much we could do about it.

I'm really glad I am the type of person who values friends more than making $ here. I can build and believe me, I could set up a store tomorrow if I felt like it. I choose not to because I choose to do other things with my time.

Remember how you felt about SL when you were first born into it's world, the innocence and awe you felt. Think about before you decided to make $ here. Think about when you were amazed by what you saw. I think it's time for a lot of people to bring that back and quit bitching so damn much...

Zsu, there's still a lot that glitters out there—it may be obscured by the negativity, but hasn't been drowned. If it was, I wouldn't want to be here at all. Sometimes, I think to myself, what if a circle of animals (like assorted ones from a zoo) surrounded all of us to observe. How would they feel? Would they feel anything at all? I don't think they could even relate. It's so funny how meaningless some—a lot of this is, if you just can't relate. I refer not to the relevant issues at hand, but all the crap that's built up around it and needs a good unclogging like a stuffed sink with matted hair, grease, and other detritus needs Draino.

Ultimately, for me, there's things I just don't get into, but I know other people enjoy discussing it, so I strive to be more apt and adept at hunting and finding what I want. Sort of a personal "search engine" for my mind that tunes into what I want to be a part of.

The reality as I know it is that there'll be a lot of disappointing redundancy that keeps repeating itself, dramas that come back year and year again, so what I can do is make an active decision to indulge in positive, happy things, and take charge—with passion and enthusiasm—of my own Second Life.

Memory can be such a horrible thing. If all past hurts were wiped again and we could start again, cleanly... but then again, messes always build up over time. And we can learn from experiences. It is up to each of us to choose whether we maintain ourselves over time, and refresh and rejuvenate how we exist in this world. :)

Torley makes a great point. Also, I have personally taken a break from the forums because at times they can get depressing and/or pointless. Kinda takes away from the fun that SL has to offer. There are some positive post as well, and give the negative post some time and soon they become hilarious with some of our forum jesters! :p

Well, to let off some steam, you could go the route that ReallyRick did and kill 2,800 other players in World of Warcraft in merely a few weeks time:

I do not think a union would be soley about striking. It is about having a unified voice. There are many good things a union can form like standards in quality of products and how business owners communicate with their customers.

There are many types of unions in this world and they are not all about going on strike and picketing. I cant think of any issues that would actually make me go on strike. I can think of many ways a union can benefit the whole community though.

Unless they are fun ways, I think you've lost your way in the Land of the Many Threads.

i dunno zsuzsu - you've been here as long as i have, and the forums were like this when we started... and oldbies at the time said the forums had been like that the year prior... but i admit to being tired of the forums... gonna spend less time on here arguing in circles and more time enjoying myself by creating stuff in SL

"Feted Inner Whores" doesn't have such a bad ring to it. Plus, it rhymes.

That is a very relevant thing to my own "first life" at the moment.

(This next is directed at ZsuZsanna, not Torley.)

Mostly that's just the nature of forums, I think. More than any other communication medium, forums seem to breed complaining, arguing, aggressiveness, blah blah blah... I can see why on a personal level; they seem much "colder" and less humanly involved than anything else to me, and I usually only READ a forum when I have a problem or need to check up on something.

And posting?... I am now only because it's convenient not having to register. :)

Spend more time inworld, offworld, climbing trees, fighting robots, making quilts, reading upside down from a tree while fighting robots and making quilts, or whatever it is you like to do, and less time around others. Solitude is what keeps me sane. :)

I suspect that in some cases it gets harder and harder to make yourself get immersed in the vitual world. When one starts out, flying around and seeing all the cool stuff is sort of magical. Feeling like you are your avatar, whatever you might choose it to be, is great fun. Over time the novelty wears off and the reality that you are just a person sitting at a computer who can't fly and is not in a strange physics defying fantasy land and does not own a big plot of land takes a more prominent place in your feelings about the time you spend engaged in Second Life.

This growing disenchantment would tend to occur in the absence of any flaws in the program, but when the program doesn't get better at the rate you want or in the ways you had dreamed of at first the immersion failure gets more severe and at an increasing rate.

Disenchantment with the product for some people leads to more time spent in the forum expressing their immersion failure in a number of ways, many of which are unpleasant to others. Also the joy that one used to feel from being in the virtual environment helped one to deal more successfully with forum negativity, but when one comes to the forum already bored with flying around places that may be new but don't look much different than the old, and doing dances that probably are still the old ones, or making clothes which differ in detail but which are after all just some pixels slapped methodically on some templates much like the ones you made before, and so on, the forums are harder to take.

Those who don't enjoy the General forum might do well to read the forums devoted to content creation, Animation, Building, Design, and Scripting, which are relativley free of prolonged complaints and which can always use another helping hands answering someone's questions.

Good point. Every forum or message board I have ever visited at one time or another has all of the above. This forum isn't bad at all. Try reading the ones that have to do with my current occupation and watch the fur fly on a constant basis.

A forum is a place to vent frustrations or to seek help in my own opinion. Some of the topics will make you think and you might actually learn something new. I am still somewhat new to SL and to the forums and just because some of the threads here can be a bit on the negative side doesn't keep me from logging in and enjoying myself. Sure having the same things rehashed over and over again gets rather boring. But, the nice thing about forums is that you have a choice weather to read a thread or not. :)
