I may want to write and sell eBooks in the future using SL notecards. However, I haven't experimented with the permission system in SL very much. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding permissions? I would like others to be able to read the notecard but not modify, give or sell it to others. Also, is there a way that copying and pasting can be disabled in the SL client? It would be very easy for someone to purchase a notecard and then simply turn around and copy the contents into another notecard or text editor.

If you put it as no mod, no copy, no trans. im pretty sure they cant select the text and copy or paste it. They could, always type it out again tho....

Axel, if I set a notecard as no mod, no copy and no trans, I don't think a user would be able to read it. I found another thread on this topic here for those of you that are interested in this issue.

AFAIK If a notecard is no copy, it can't be read. (This is because if it can be read, it can be re-keyed, which makes a copy.)

This came up before and ill give the same advice.
You can always make a texture based e-book device thingy. It could be a hud to make it always be face-on and move with the av. Yeah its a horrible hack but what you gunna do. Also there was mention of improved permissions, but I dont know if/when that will come, or even if it will help with notecards. |

Original Written Work

I wonder if on a no mod/copy/ no trans version of a notecard
If it there could be a checkbox available in the creation of the notecard to check as "Original Written Work" to cause such a notecard to preserve the name of the Creator regardless if it is copied? I am not an expert on this topic, so I could be overlooking something. _____________________

You might consider using one of the more sophisticated book systems like THinC (I think that's how he capitalizes it). It uses images such that the text can't be copied, and the images themselves cannot be copied since they are encrypted (you can still do screen shots, but nothing will stop that).
Also, a book format looks a lot more professional than a note card format. You have full control over formatting, fonts, colors, images, etc. Books can be loaded into the HUD and are just as readable as note cards. You might look at my book that's on the market (Joy of Second Life Sex). There's an abridged $1 version that would give you a feel for what is possible. _____________________

I agree completely - the Thinc book system is incredibly well done, and very reasonably priced. I have not seen anything comparable to it, and compared to dull notecards, it makes viewing a book in SL an immersive experience. I am currently working on a coffee table book and could not recommend using it more highly. The setup is very simple, and the security features built into it are pretty impressive. Definitely consider using this as an alternative to just using notecards. _____________________

But THINCbooks are so slow!

The problem with using any image-based alternative to text is that you are then at the mercy of the speed of texture loading. As we all know, sometimes that is painfully slow. Reading a THINCbook or any similar image book is MUCH slower than reading a notecard -- so much so that many of us just won't bother.

However, overall I find the advantages out weigh the disadvantages. _____________________
