Bridges over Linden land

I wish to connect two of my islands via a bridge: their posts would rest on my land but the bridge would span a channel of community land. Is that within the rules? Any comments welcome. Thanks, Margaux

wouldn't you be usuing up some of the space of the citizens on that land?

You can do this but you do risk having a Linden return your bridge if your neighbors complain. I had just such a bridge spaning a public water way in Cypa for about a year. Because I made sure the bridge was attractive, and that it was a draw bridge that would sense a boat approaching, I never received a complaint. Provided you recognize other resident's right to use the waterway and are careful not to obstruct their passage, you will probably be okay.

I think the key here is to understand that you do not have an intrinsic right to do this, and will only be allowed at the pleasure of your neighbors.

If it's protected land, I believe LL often turn a blind eye to bridges...unless complainants can prove they're blocking passage to vehicles on the waterway. This is what somebody told me when I got annoyed with a huge bridge over protected land that was blocking boat traffic, so it might not be true. Just repeating...really. Maybe ask in the answers forum for an official response.

(And I didn't complain about or AR that bridge owner btw...I just bought land elsewhere instead.)

Edit: Oh, and make sure the root prim of your bridge is on your own land to prevent it being auto-returned.

I've had a bridge over a Linden road for months now, no one's said anything about it. It's almost 11 metres above the ground, and very little of the support structure hangs over the road.

If you build it well, and don't block traffic, you should be fine.

One of the properties that I live on is a cluster of small land area separated by Linden waterways. None of the water is particularly 'navigable' for boat traffic. I did once sail a pretty high yacht from a lake two sims away, all the way to beside my house there, but there is 'noplace to go' on those waterways. They just meander through thyat part of the sim.

We have, at last count, something like 5 bridges that cross those Linden waterways. Our household owns the land on both sides, and we make sure the root prim is on our own land. No problems.

I have seen cases where someone built a bridge from their land to someone else's land, without permission. That, in my opinion, is a bad idea, and is likely to get the bridge returned.

who shared their thoughts.

I just want to emphasize that protected land seems to me to be very important for free movement of people. Unfortunately this is not often the case in sl and for me as a newcomer [places seem to be much crowded (not with people but with buildings]. I would even support that protected land should take more space in future to guarantee more possibilities for all kind of navigators (sea, air, land).

Anyone supporting this idea? Anyone know of a support group for this idea?

Whilst I understand the thought of 'protected land' and 'protected views', if a bridge is done tastefully and unobtrusively, then it should enhance the value of the land, not destroy the area.

The subject of roads, rights of way, transport systems, bridges and suchlike is something I feel strongly about, in that there should be more of them. It is an issue I am looking into, but nothing to report right now.

Well...I'm with you on allowing for better movement of vehicles. Used and enjoyed responsibly, vehicles can be truly entertaining in SL, but unfortunately, it's more landowner's security measures than structures that wreck the experience. There are sims with zoning rules which allow for a more pleasant landscape of course (not all privately owned). I just sold out and moved to Dreamland myself.

... except that's 2 years old, and things do change.

I asked Guy Linden if he would do some work on a bit of Linden land near one of my parcels, where one road stopped about 15 metres away from another road running at 90 degrees, and it made a lot of sense to simply raise the land level a little and join the two roads together.

The problem seems to be, essentially, that there isn't the time for 'large scale' projects because there are so many requests - a look at the Land Management forum will give you an idea of the amount.

So it's not that it can't be done, it's just a case of what can be done given the resources (time and manpower) available to do it.

Where there are strips of land, they are obviously "put aside" for roads and public rights of way - but no roads appear for the same reason. It's not like you are asking Linden Lab to do something unusual, merely to complete something that was started; which leaves us only the time and manpower issue.
