1. DO NOT put transfer capablities on it, and it wont be sold or given away.

2. DO NOT put transfer capabilities on it, and it wont be sold or given away.

Personally if I purchase an item and it has transfer on it, I have the right to give it or sell it to whomever I choose and there are no rules of Lindens that can prevent it. (which I actually just give away when i dont' like it anymore).

If the item has a NO TRANSFER on it, I can NOT sell it or give it away.
(I do like transfer so i can give it away instead of deleting it :/ why not make it a bit more if it is a transfer item? I personally wouldn't mind paying more for that)

I do think people are not using the tools that are given them by Linden.

Also would like to point out, with how long people have been around very rarely are you going to see any orginial ideas or concepts.. Sorry guys but its true :/ Somewhere someone has had a simliar idea. If it is not an exact duplicate they probably thought of it up themselves.. :/ Than again they might have seen yours and liked the concept. There is nothing against seeing something and deriving from the concept.. :/

Or heck all those shoe vendors would be toast!!!

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!

Whenever you introduce a product, you have exclusive rights from now until eternity to sell it. Nobody can even make a product similar because they are encroaching on your divine copyright protection and could be sued.

See Madam Zagato's thread, for example.

Yeah I saw that, I feel for her for the simple fact that she seems truly upset..

But I do blame all you forum trolls for encouraging this type of behavior :/

I on the otherhand am perfect and never do any wrong :D

So, I saw someone copy my look, which by the way with the amount of people taken into acount with the amount of decent flexi hair it stands to reason they probably came up with it themselves.. Just shows I have good taste.. /struts around

I completely agree with this statement.

i believe the big complaint here is that people are bypassing these permissions, using scripts to make exact copies of those no transfer items, stealing the textures with glintercept, stealing sounds with soundcard input->sound recorders. far as i know scripts and anims are still somewhat safe.

You should definitely sue them for encroaching on your look IP copyright.

It seems to me that is a vital piece of information that is not being supplied when they are notifying the public. In fact it seems to me that most of them do have transfer rights and they do mention it.

My suggestion is, if your ideas as soooo damn original, just dont put them in SL -- go get a patent and sit your prim(adonna) ass down.... I am so tired of these creators who think they invented the couch or the grandfather clock. Biatch please.... Like more than half of us here are not making reproductions of items that exist in RL. I dont get this I am so original, dont you dare steal my ideas thing -- is this a side effect of the teen grid bleeding into main grid? Or were we all THIS childish to begin with?

<serious reply>
Seriously, I agree, learn the permission settings and use them. If you dont want resale, mark your items no transfer and also ask lindens to instate an additional bit that differentiates between transfer and resale.

Just scripts, for the most part. And loopback recording for sound is so gauche.

Really, if it's out there, it's out there... a bit unfortunate in some respects, but life.

Your best bet is to file takedown notices and do your best to be the better, more recognized brand than those who would take from you. Your sales lost to theft tend to be small scale and the newer folks who wind up buying are more random chance, so the money may not have come to you, anyway. Again, unfortunate, but what you gotta do.

You could just make stuff that's such crap that no one would even want to copy it.

That would work too.

Most object cloning seems to be done by hand, not by script. SL's assets are in no way secure (with the exception of scripts and even they are on shaky ground). If an asset is streamed to the client, then it can be stolen. If the client can decode them all that need be done is to grab a copy from the client. The methods you describe are... ugly; there are more insidious methods that give the attacker more options.

You're awfully new here to be telling us what we're doing right and wrong in this manner.

In case you are unsophisticated enough to be aware of the distinction between the letter and spririt of the law, consider an item made to be given as a freebie. It would naturally be set transfer, and until recently, the prevailing culture here has been that such items should not be sold for profit by others as this would be in conflict with the wishes of the creator, whatever the permissions might indicate. It's a pretty straightforward moral call.

When it comes to re-selling another creators commercial items, the distinction is more subtle, but were people to care more about ethics & frankly, just courtesy, they wouldn't do this without at least talking to the original creator - this isn't RL, and there are plenty of reasons why a creator might not want someone else selling their products at a higher price.

You should also consider that content creators have been explicitly requesting for some time now an improved permissions system that allows transfer without resale amongst other things, so that they have the control to determine how their products might be redistributed without relying on the apparently declining ethical values of the community at large.

I was set to disagree with you when you said learn the permissions system, but then you covered its deficiences so agreed. Though it would be nice to be able to rely on the honesty and ethics of every resident, it's clearly too idealistic of a hope, so more refined methods of enforcement is the best we can hope for.

My textures are no transfer. Didn't stop someone from screengrabbing the inventory preview and selling them anyway.

Maybe being fairly new I can see the problem for what it is, since I am not embroiled in it...

I agree, it is horrible to sell freebies, in fact that is a personal pet peeve of mind since I've purchased so many.

But for people to be up in arms for selling their own items as transfer than are upset when it happens.. Well that is ludicrous, yes it would be polite. But as a person who has no store or anything, if I decide to have a yard sale to clean out my inventory, it is my prerogative to sell what has transfer rights on it and I will, and heck I'll invite everyone here..

People seeing something that is similar and just assuming that it was copied is astounding to me. There is a possibility that the person came up with the idea themselves without seeing it at all. If it is an EXACT duplicate, than I would have to lean more towards it was copied, but if it is just similar.. meh..

yeah that is just messed up :(
With having made the texture yourself, and not downloading it off the net, and setting it as no transfer I feel you are justified in being upset. It is logical.

Not that I dictate what is right and not.. gawd I feel I have to spell everything out at times or someone is going to grab their pitchfork :(

Not really, you over simplified an issue that has been the subject of a lot of reasoned debate and came across as patronising.

I don't think anyone has ever had a problem with this, at least so far as legitimate yard sales & products so you are merely imagining there's a problem here where there isn't. Note though, these events have been abused by unscrupulous residents in the past both to promote commercial business and sell freebies and rip-offs, so they have got themselves a somewhat bad name.

Of course, but again, you're stating the obvious here.

Well, I refuse to walk around on egg shells because people refuse to understand where I am coming from, I am as much a part of this community as anyone else, I pay my dues and everyone can piss off as far as I am concerned.. -.-

I agree I am stating the obvious, but if you notice most of the "they stole my stuff" posts here, is just something simliar.. Very few our honest rip offs.. Majority of the posts here are either they found something similar and decided it was stolen, or It was resold somewhere else and it had transfer rights.

It seems people are making things into something more than what it is....

Out of curiousity.... why is giving your stuff away, rather than deleting it, a better option?

Seriously.

Deleting it frees DB space, helps the economy by encouraging people to buy things rather than depend on hand outs, and helps stop the spread of junk objects that nobody really wants.

I can see the point of having +transfer on valuable items so you can give them to your friends when you leave SL... items of over 300L or so in value. But really.... will anyone else find a use for the 25L little awkwardly-shaped prim I bought once because I thought it was cool that someone could twist a prim into that shape? Unlikely.

Maybe a '+transfer on valuable objects where people reselling them to each other is part of your economic model, -transfer on junk objects to stop their spread' policy is a good idea.
