No.

BTW, the private islands AFAIK have always been priced as such.

There *are* lower-prices areas scattered generously throughout the grid, if a person spends some time to seek them out. Not to mention if one does not like the prices, one can vote with their wallet and not shop there.

Just because a shop may charge an outrageous price, they only get away with it if the customer agrees to pay that price.

When I first started SL, I was thinking... 1-5k, they got to be out of their god dam minds. JUST FOR A PIECE OF VIRTUAL PIXELS!!!

Then, I found out that land isn't that easy to come by and it really helps when you want to make Lz or support a group that neds a base.... so I am now trying to get one my damn self :P

I think that in the last town hall Philip said that there are currently over 1100 private islands. So, it looks like a whole lot of people are willing to pay that price.

Um, I've seen my company's Rackspace bill. It's not a high price. It's not a low price, either, but it's a fairly typical price for hosting. It's a bargain compared to Rackspace. (But does it come with "Fanatical Support";(TM)? <laughs>;)

It should also be noted that US$1250 for 65536 sq.m. comes to under L$6 per sq.m. That's pretty cheap for land in SL...

Only if you have that amount of money in the first place, and you either have a whole group of people contributing towards the costs or plan on endless commercial activities to cover your costs (which will mean you end up being just as boring as 90% of the grid).

Um, I thought private islands went for just one price?

Or are these people selling on pre-landscaped private islands?

Still sounds like a bargain to me. :)

Yeah, sure, doing anything big requires sufficient resources, either on one's own, or doing it together in a group. What's new about that?

Better yet, what's wrong with that?

If you look at the islands page, LL is selling two 'sizes' of islands, 16 acre and 64 acre. What it actually amounts to is either 1 island or 4 islands connected together. 4 x 1250 == 5000. Yay, so you don't even get any discount for buying them that way.

Islands used to be 980 instead of 1250, also. That was a while ago though.
