You know, I've not questioned it much before, but let me get some other opinions...

Why is it, we can rez anything but PLANTS on rented land? Why can't I pull some Linden trees out of inventory and place them? Is it a bug? A needed restriction? A holdover from a time it was a part of the engine?

Anyone's insight into this would be appreciated. I just can't figure out the reason.

Because you have to own the parcel, or be in a group that owns the parcel to rez Linden plants on it. You can't even be in a group that the land is assigned to; the group must own the land.

It's a stupid methodology that has been brought to their attention numerous times over the past three years and should've been fixed long ago but will probably never be.

How much land are you renting?

Unless you're renting the equivalent of a "furnished house", if the landlord didn't put you in the landholding group then they're not doing things right.

I am pretty sure that 'planting' falls under land editing. If the land editing box is checked, you should be able to plant. Obviously it's less of a hassle if you own the land, or an officer of group deeded land, as you can toggle that land edit on and off yourself :)

Yup, having EDIT LAND checked will let anyone come by and plant trees, and terraform, or whatever. Best of have supervision but it can be done. :)

If you own the land, or an officer in the group that owns the land, you don't have to toggle edit on and off. You can place Linden plants with the edit off.

The problem is that placing Linden plants is tied to land editing in the first place. If Linden plants were object, like everything else, renters could simply place them on group land as members. As Torley wisely advised, toggling the edit on for them now means that ANYONE can fly by and edit the land.

But this falls into the joy and happiness and hair and fab0 video wachagonadotolovethelindens wahoo whatever category. So it'll never be fixed.

If the region as a whole prevents any terraforming, like Nova Albion, Boardman and DeHaro for example, can a land owner leave land editing turned on to allow planting of Linden trees/plants and not have to worry about the land getting raised or lowered?

Yes we can yes yes uhuh I've done this in Boardman because that Ingrid woman gets all bent out of shape if she can't drop Linden plants on every square inch of visible land.

Some plants you can, some you can't. Only the landowner can plant trees or grass, which fall under the "terraforming"/landscaping options.

So, here's the rule:
-- If it's something you'd plant when you terraform the land, only an owner can plant it.
-- If it can be planted in a container (pot, pool, or planter), a renter can plant it.
