From Slashdot: Terra Nova has an interesting discussion going, talking about what really matters when we talk about a virtual world's population. Total registered accounts? Accounts logged in since last month? Concurrent users? Interesting stuff. From the article: "In a similar vein we discussed Second Life's 100K+ members, a figure which I and others have questioned here on TN. Cory Ondrejka said that SL's 'concurrency numbers are rapidly approaching 4500, about 17,000 residents were in SL in the last 24 hours, and 50,000 in the last 30 days... If you go back even 90 days you get about 90% of the accounts having logged in.'" http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/2006/01/the_numbers_gam.html~Ulrika~

~Ulrika~ Well, you got my attention at least. Unfortunately, I'll have to read it when I'm not at work.

I've never noticed before, but according to the SL Forum Statistics at the bottom of the page, we're a few hundred off from 200k members (forums only). Do forum accounts stay active even after you cancel your SL account, or if you're banned, etc? EDIT: Thanks Eggy \/, that makes sense.

The forum numbers are counting all accounts that were ever created, including alpha, beta and closed accounts.

I've been noticing the increasing concurrent user number as well. But also, and to some degree with greater interest, the daily currency exchange number. When I last looked yesterday evening, the number was just shy of US$370,000. That's significantly higher than the numbers I recall just a few months ago (in the US$70k's); and I believe almost twice what Philip mentioned in a recent audio broadcast (dividing his number down to a daily figure).
However, I've noticed today a marked decline; perhaps half the rate from this time the past few days. Anyone else notice this? Or am I dreaming?

And these numbers were verified by whom? Please note that I have over 2 billion posts on these forums alone. See box to the left. No, the other left, yes, that one.

From: Gabe Lippmann This would make sense. You thinking holiday sales and the aftermath? {edit: whoops. Forgot about the update!}
