Why would we want to remind ourselves of what we will never be able to do inworld by watching a looping video made with a specialized client that we have no access to use?

I don't know what the heck you're talking about but you're wrong. It was done with the standard SL client and some postproduction work.

The "How it was done" web page specifically says they used a specially modified beta client...

Eggy, read the Making Of page where Eric Linden specifically says the following:

From: someone
Mouthing Off
Probably the most unique aspect of this production is its emulation of speech. Linden Lab developers created a beta version of Second Life that enabled me to map Quick Time movies onto avatar face meshes. This was done to examine the validity and potential of visemes (facial positions that articulate certain sounds in speech). I used AfterEffects to composite DV footage of moving mouths onto character face maps, and rendered them as Quick Time movies. Using the beta tool set, I was able to cleanly map the movies onto the avatars.

Whoa, interesting. I thought they just did it like the schwarzenegger imitator in Conan O'Brien, superimposing a real mouth on the captured video.

My little 3ggZ0r is so easily fooled by the crafty evil Lindens.

What makes you think we won't have that feature sooner or later?
And why the heck does this even matter, is it another FIC thing? :P

The FIC know all! Glory to the all crushing fist! (note: link provided for humorous comparison)

How many uses are there for a streaming URL to be played on an avatar mesh? I can think of two: a TV-head avatar, which wouldn't work if you left your parcel, or a mouth animation like they used in that movie, which again wouldn't work if you left your parcel.

It's not really worth the bother.

Me too, seems they only used that technique to make the animated texture though. Good way to save time - no messing about with pixel tracking.

As for getting the feature as a standard part of the client, I'd say that's all gonna depend on if there's a demand for it. Lordfly - it's already implimented, they'd only have to make a tidy interface for it. And while there aren't many other uses for it, I think it's indended one is good enough...

Well, as we know, LLab's dev process isn't exactly bulletproof. Introducing a wonky hack to the already-unstable video streaming code I'm sure would introduce more bugs than the feature is worth. :)

I talked to Eric a little about his face movie (actually it was my suggestion) and the biggest difference with the mough mapping was that Eric's avatar wasn't capable of baked textures. Normally when an avarar skin is drawn, all the layers (wrinkle, makeup, skin tattoo) are added together for the final product that you see. His avatar wasn't capable of that. It could only play the one texture (media/tatoo) or stream.
This isn't practical for SL at large.

And as to wanting to film like that. In my talks with people in SL, nearly everyone mentions it as one of the "less cool" effects. My "suggestion" was actually a modification of Eric's original plan... Using a frame-animated texture on a prim that was worn in front of the mouth. I'm pretty sure anyone can do that.

I did all of the scripting seen in the movie in standard LSL. The only script which wasn't mine was the camera boom which I'd bet was also standard LSL - no reason it wouldnt be.
