Permissions Gone Wacky?

Ok, resmods, you can put this wherever you want, because I don't know where to put it. But please leave it long enough for some people to SEE it first. (And as a warning for everybody to check their boxes, if nothing else.)

A customer IM'd me to point out that he couldn't buy one of my houses. I went to my shop and discovered that about 30 percent of the boxes (the houses are all packed in boxes), had done one of the following things:

1. Stopped being buyable

2. Changed their permissions to full permissions, or changed to transfer only instead of mod/copy only, and/or were also unbuyable.

3. Looked like the same boxes, still had the same floating text above them and everything, but were actually named (in edit) one of two different kinds of TREES, including a palm tree I don't even have on that lot, and had no contents at all.

I'm thinking this must have had something to do with an update.

But ones that had been renamed as trees makes me think it might have had something to do with when a few weeks ago I took everything into inventory and put it out again, after I expanded my land.

But it was only SOME of them that were this way. Plus I have no palm trees on that lot.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Anyone know what causes it?

Yes this has happened before. There was the great Permissions Bug of the late summer perhaps even early fall of 2004 where many designers had either pieces of outfits or entire outfits go full copy.mod.transfer and anyone can copy/share. It was unnerving and pissed off alot of people. It was eventually resolved, and sadly the aftermath yielded some texture theft and that sort of thing. Once the bug was known people ended up exploiting it. So thanks for bringing this up.

The hightlight of the permissions bug is the snapshot several of us have of Philip Linden in a naughty nightgown :D I <3 the Wear clothes now option hehehe :D

Update: Trees have nothing to do with it.

Apparently my alt bought trees. And as for the palm tree, that probably had to do with me on my other lot.

So, what it seems to be is that the permissions changed themselves around, on some, but not all, of the boxes on my lot.

And some of them became completely not buyable.

Y'all better check your boxes.

I've noticed lately when i'm building all of a sudden I'll have lost permissions on some of the prims, prims that I have made. Very odd. And these are unscripted, untextured prims, so I know its not those causing them to go wonky. Not sure what's up.

The only thing I noticed recently was that a couple full mod/copy/transfer objects I passed on to one of my alt accounts came out as no copy when I rezzed them.

I think we are beginning to see the death throes of the asset server; incidents like these are becomming too frequent to count and have seemingly increased over the last six months or so.

I have speculated in the past that part of the problem was that SL was probably coded never expecting asset server requests to fail and therefore lacks recovery code where the client says "please rez a prim like this" and only part of the relevant database tables are updated but there is no retry or error indication because it was never planned for.

SL might also be reaching the point of taxing the underlying database so that inconsistencies like the "palm tree" noted above are just simply happening.

The preceding consists entirely of observation and informed speculation and resemblance to the truth could not possibly come from me as we don't have enough information about the underlying mechanics to allow for better.

Well, all I can say is everybody better check their boxes and items like a hawk. I plan to check mine every day I'm on.

That, and if this goes on, there won't be any point to having a business.

Due to this thread, I've logged in several times just to check my boxes. So far, nothing gone awry, that I've noticed. (knocks on wood.)

Thanks for the heads-up.

If all, or even a percentage of my boxes change perms, I'm in for a whole mess of work with the amount of inventory I have in my store. That will be one of those times when I seriously sit back and consider if it's even worth it.

I've just now notified a friend, who by the way only setup shop a matter of days ago, that the majority of his boxes are now not set to sell.

Also, the reason I actually noticed this was because at first they all told me they were trees!!

Another little one to add to the mix:- I distributed an update to a system I developed yesterday. I rather than dropping a random folder on everyone and hoping they'd find it I sent an updater item that would give them the items, a notecard explaining what was going on and so forth...

About one-third of the people sent back saying they'd not got all the parts - the asset server seems to have decided to reset permissions on the items for no good reason (I tested it with my alt and it worked fine, I assume some of the people haven't checked the contents yet and it looks like some have got the whole thing just as my alt has).

Bugs are *really* annoying, perms bugs even more so - but intermittent perms bugs, get your act together! - and yes I'm guessing it's the asset server dying under the strain again.

One of the *VERY* bad things the new patch did was make trees have a bigger area to select, so you will easily edit/select them by accident. :(
