as far as i remember the asset server is a cluster, hence multiple machines, this computer is a baby compared to it

Hmm.. Hey heres an idea!

Can't be on the grid? No Problem! Your computer becomes part of the global asset server!

I believe Linden Lab uses these Isilon IQ: http://www.isilon.com/products/index.php?sub=iq&page=productshttp://www.gridtoday.com/grid/642161.htmlFrom: someone Isilon IQ delivers a record of up to 528TB of capacity and 7 GBps of performance in one single file system; creating a single shared pool of storage which streamlines the creation, management and delivery of critical media assets.

Pretty sure they need some serious storage like Baba linked. I think assets and stuff might be one of the biggest weaknesses of second life as everything is a unique object so there's tons of repetition which with 3k for a prim would add up fast ;o

From: Tod69 Talamasca I thought LL used some old 486DX2's running Windows 98 (first edition)??? I was thinking more along the lines of a Tandy 80 or a Commodore 64... and there's a chimpanzee that was continuously imputting the lines of basic to call and search!

They run somewhere in the area of $25,000-$65,000 each.. I think they will move away from the asset server model, to a megacluster of low cost hardware like google ;0 That way a failure of one small system does not disrupt the other 20,000(or 20,000,000) servers. Your asset would have a a URI that would reference a specific system or maybe a load balancing server which would control a much smaller datbase.
