I just finally got around to showing my Dad what SL was. I know some folks get it, some dont, but I've never encountered the "I dont get it, but its stupid". So I dont think we'll be seeing him on here anytime soon. Just so you know- he still thinks computers are a passing fad, has never ever used one but it's fine for someone else to do, can't figure out a cell phone, is the old-fashioned type that believes paychecks are earned by blood & sweat & tears. Yea, you try living with that.

Bet he knows how to turn the tv on with the remote but doesn't know how to get to the tv guide menu without help? Hug him Todd and be glad that he won't be dropping in on you and your cyber date to watch!!

My mom uses a computer, but barely. I've showed her both SL and the newspaper. Her eyes glaze over when I talk about SL, but she is genuinely proud of me regarding the paper. My dad just knows that I'm doing something I love, and that's enough info for him.

From: Tod69 Talamasca ....is the old-fashioned type that believes paychecks are earned by blood & sweat & tears. Imagine that! What an antiquated concept, actually putting *into* life in exchange for getting a paycheck! Who'd wanna do that when one can get paid for sloth and camping? *rolls eyes* - Newfie

Well, I have a rl friend, who lives in another state, and who joined SL and occasionally comes on to see me in SL. She and her husband are building a house in real life. She showed me the pictures and plans, so naturally I immediately set about building it in SL! Well, I finished the house - at one point I had to sort of take off from the real thing and go into the reality of SL with it, you know what I mean, but it is pretty clearly that house - and it has sold several so far. (The "Getaway House".) So she was on the other night, and I took her to my shop to see the finished product. She thinks I'm a tad crazed about computer games and whatnot, but she certainly understands them - she does graphic work irl and is also the one who introducted me to the computer some ten years or so ago, or however long ago that was, mainly by giving me her old one, since I couldn't afford/couldn't see spending money on a computer. So anyway, I told her to get Steve and make him come up to her computer and see "his" house on the computer. He was completely blown away! Pleased, charmed, intrigued, and rather astonished that it could even be done, or how it could be done! And I think kind of amazed that I even bothered to do it. She told me on the phone the next day how he'd stood there saying things like, "Where's the kitchen? What about cabinets?" and she'd show him the cabinets and he was loving it. And I know exactly what you mean about kids these days. My girls, who are 16 and 18, understand that it can be done, and understand there are lots of people in SL busy doing the same thing, and doing similar things in other computer games, but beyond that, they simply just don't quite get it. I'm very familiar with that glazed-over expression you talk about. Oh well. Maybe some day the younger generation will get with the program. coco

I fail to see how such a belief should be considered "old-fashioned," except inasmuch as the current generation of young people is a bunch of lazy, whining, sniveling weasels born with an entitlement complex. From: Tod69 Talamasca Yea, you try living with that. Maybe you should move out.

I tried showing SL to my friends once. They all seemed interested in it, hell even my mum was. But I'm not aggressive enough to get them to join. Though I think if I did manage to get them all in SL, that'd be an instant tribe of crazyass creativity right there.

People keep reacting to the comment he made. I believe he is referring to his father believing that the only valid way to earn a paycheck is through back-breaking manual labor - building buildings or working on a farm. Modern jobs like software developer or stock broker would not apply as a valid way to earn a living. That type of thinking is old fashioned.

Maybe you should move out. Um, I did. Years ago. Lost the job- thank you corporate america!- and had to move back in. Either that or live in a box in an alleyway. So it's been a while of sending out the resumes, etc, etc. problem is most jobs around here SUCK- barely above minimum wage. With $80000 in student loans, $5.50/hr doesnt even cover it. And having a college education is actually a bad thing for these jobs. Been told by several employers I was over-educated for those jobs. Go figure!!! Actually, he is "old fashioned". Women dont belong at work. African Americans- well you figure out the word used. Only perverts & crazy people use the internet- since we all know thats what the media tells you, so it must be true. See, I think you misunderstand- working hard is one thing. Working to the point of almost crippling yourself for life just to prove your "a man" is another. He's about 2 steps away from Disability. As for young people being lazy, whining, sniveling... define young. I've worked with 50 yrs olds who were well known for disappearing when work was needed done, and 17 yr olds who'd help anyone they could. Just because someones young & able to use something like SL to make a buck doesnt make 'em lazy. Camping chairs & Cassinos do!

That's awful; however will you manage on his disability check? I wonder if he hadn't expected to have at least one less adult to support by now. From: Tod69 Talamasca Just because someones young & able to use something like SL to make a buck doesnt make 'em lazy. May not make 'em lazy but apparently doesn't make 'em enough to pay their bills. You're lucky to have your dad to fall back on.

Hey, I've got an idea! I'll start a thread about, oh, say the weather. Then wouldn't it be fun if some people seized on a few innocuous comments in my post to derail the whole thing and attack my personal life. Won't it be fun?

My mom get it... she keeps trying to join Happily, it wouldn't run on her old laptop and while she has a new one, she hasn't thought to try installing SL again. Something I feel no urge to encourage her to do.. I can just imagine my fundamentalist mother wandering around SL... "Oh, so this is what you do on here?.... *pause*.... Why does the shop with your name on it sell animations that have me whipping/sodomizing another person?"

Somebody showed it to me once, and it didn't make any sense to me at all. I think you have to have a computer to access it?

From: Tod69 Talamasca ...I know some folks get it, some dont, but I've never encountered the "I dont get it, but its stupid". ... I've had mixed success trying to recruit friends and family into SL. I showed it to a computer-gamer friend of mine. He thought it was a pointless "kinky" sex-chat program. Well maybe for some, that's true, but he never got past the free-form nature of SL -- if there are no objectives and you can't win... WHAT'S THE POINT?? My brother, who shall remain anonymous (mainly because I can't remember his account name), is now an SL addict, I'm happy to say. So I have company.
