It has crossed my mind to check out what SL would be like through a remote client - but I didn't want to even try it, knowing that the outcome would be horrifying.

I am still rather curious, though. Keep us posted!

My guess would be is that the performance would be completely unacceptable. Over the years I have spent tons of time in different remote control applications (VNC, PCanywhere, RDP/Terminal Services, etc.) and some of them provide a very life-like performance profile for standard desktop applications such as Microsoft Office (RDP/terminal services being one of the best for windows, and built in in XP Pro) but when you launch things like games you typically force what are called full screen re-draws (showing videos causes similiar issues), which makes the software have to constantly send the entire screen to the remote client, which eat up substantial processor and bandwidth on the target machine. If you do get it to work (and you won't commonly due to video driver issues with games) it is usually painfully slow (1-2 frames per 5-10 seconds) and fairly non-responsive.

Now that I have said all of that I have SL on my desktop and will wander into the living room here in a bit and try it out using TightVNC (freely available) and the built-in RDP client for XP Pro and let you know how it goes to remote control my desktop from my machine in the living room. This will be over a Wireless LAN connection so it should be better than you would experience while remote.

The results varied between "did not work" and "didn't work well enough to use, even at LAN speeds". I got a couple of screen redraws in one case but it was painful at best and each time it tried to work I had to start SL on the machine I was remote controlling locally then go and try to remote control it.

My suggestion: Find a laptop that has the beef to pull it off and take it along :^).
