Several people have now told me that the eye dropper can be used for content theft. Is this complete BS or is there any truth to the matter? I don't see how an eye dropper could be used to steal textures... you need perms to even use the eye dropper to pull up a texture.

Somebody in the know, please disconfirm this ugly rumor.

Sadly it is true and has been tested by several people. It has also been reported and we are waiting on a response.

There, I feel much better.

I know I tested this (for my own curiousity, not out of any intention to steal a texture) and it most certainly did NOT apply the texture I selected to my item. Perhaps there's particular settings that make this more likely, texture wise?

Well if there are I don't think anyone wants to put it down in detail here. I just hope LL takes the reports seriously enough to really investigate. Unfortunately thats not likely to happen over the weekend.

From the quick test i gave it, it's not the eyedropper tool but more of combination of edit mode and newly available preference option... result is still the same though, it's possible to quite easily produce ~256x256 version of any texture in SL (though ones with alpha channel are likely to get messed up)

Then again, maybe that's different thing altogether and eyedropper allows some other way of copying, too x'x

Exactly. It has been tested with textures of various permission on various types of items and the results were the same. But I think only LL needs know the details, easy as they are, of how to do it for now.

To pick up on this, and hijack a little, this is something they will have to address if they wish to evolve into 'teh 3d interweb'

I agree this isn't a good thing, but even if you have it removed theres still several other ways to steal textures. :/ This is just the easiest one, except snapshotting and 3rd party apps. I also noticed it retrieves the UUID's for the textures... Are they TRYING to frustrate their customers?
