I am just to the point where I am considering buying/renting some land but one thing has me slightly confused. Is a 512sqm plot of land a square about 22.62 meters on a side, or a square 512 meters on a side? Assuming of course it is a square.

32x16 = 512 so I'll bet that's what they use. Thanks for clearing that up.

I propose that Second Life declare the abbreviation for square meters be "sm" to keep from having to put sq. m. or m^2 or anything else that is harder to type than sm.
