Are there any areas in the world that are desert? If not is it possible to change the texture look of the ground to be desert-like in appearance?
Thanks

I read something about first land but doing a search ingame shows none of it. Is there a way to know how to find this type of land?

First Land goes fast when its first released - keep trying, it may take a few days for you to find a sizeable selection to choose from. If you're looking in the Land tab, either typing in "first" or setting up the search criteria to view land priced at $L1/m should bring it up.
Unfortunately, you can't change the ground texture of land that you purchase, unless you buy a private island. There are a number of people that rent out parcels on their private islands that have special ground textures like desert, island sand, etc. - some names to check out for that are Hiro Queso, Adam Zaius, and Anshe Chung. (They may or may not be available to speak directly, but the last two have websites that should detail what they have available.) Some other people also "fake" ground textures on the land they purchase on the mainland by rezzing flat prims and applying the ground texture directly to them - all the Linden ground textures are available in your Inventory -> Library -> Textures folder. _____________________

Well, Anshe's reply brings up a good point, one I had thought about mentioning when I brought up rentals.
Shasta, you can only use your First Land privledge once - it has to be the first time you ever purchase land in the game. If you rent a parcel of land from another player, you can save your First Land purchase for another time. Other advantages to renting include being able to pay your rent in $L or $US, sometimes at lower rates than the tier you pay to LL if you purchase land on the mainland. However a lot (if not all) of the rentals come with some sort of zoning rules about what you can and can't build - some are more lenient than others, so do your homework and figure out what you want to be able to do. For most people this is a plus, as the chaos of the mainland isn't to everyone's taste. Since you mentioned desert land specifically, Anshe does have desert sims - they're the only ones I've seen in SL so far, but if there are others I've missed, someone chime in and let me know. _____________________
