If dwell is gone, why are there still camping chairs?

I've been curious about this for a while. Maybe somebody can answer this for me, as I've never quite figured it out...

Back when there was L$ paid out for dwell, I understood camping chairs and dance pads. I pay you a little bit of money to stay on my land, because I get a kickback from LL for it. If I'm smart, I give you slightly less than I get from LL and make a small profit over time.

However, what is the point of camping chairs now? I can only think of a couple of reasons. Is it one of these?

A) Most camping chair places are casinos, and perhaps people get bored and just end up spending their earned money on the slots, losing it all back to the house. (no loss to the owner)

B) More people on your land means a higher popularity rating, and puts you up higher on the Search list. Then the owner gets the satisfaction of saying "I win!" The only other purpose I can see for being higher up the Search list, is that more people will visit your location. That's great, if you're selling something, but if you're giving more money away to to more people camping, how could that be a benefit?

Is there anything else I'm not considering? I'm really guessing it's (A) most of the time (which works for businesses and casinos, selling goods, or selling the ability to play casino games). After hearing a lot about The Sims Online, (B) seems pretty likely too.

Could be this has been discussed ad nauseum, and I missed it in my search... If so, maybe someone could point me towards a thread.

Its has always been about gaming the popular places list, its like buying a bigger advert.

One measure of option B.

A handful of laziness on the part of the camper.

A generous portion of stupidity on the part of the camping chair owner.

Until people realise that quality does not automatically equate to the traffic that land has, sadly I don't see the problem going away.

Especially with Linden Lab appearing unwilling to do something about people being logged in and unattended for hours and hours on end, somehow overriding the timeout mechanism that is there for a purpose; make doing so an offence, and start handing out slaps and warnings for those that do.

A nice easy way to help this would be for a Linden to reset regions at random intervals, especially those that are known camper havens.

I've never actually done this for any of my shops, but I've seen them in other shops.. most likely to raise their dwell and reach the top of the list in search.. :)

Overriding the timeout is pretty trivial. There's 3rd party programs that can jitter your mouse pointer or whatever to keep SL thinking you're at the computer. Also, the Godmode plugin can just turn off idle/away functionality altogether. One of the few things that works on it.

So it's sounding like it's popularity for popularity's sake, for the most part... And the more popular you get, the more you pay for it too :)

No profit then, with that line of thinking...

You pay people to come, so that more people will come and you can pay them too! Well, unless you're a store, then perhaps you make money off purchases due to the traffic.

Well, I suppose you get what you pay for, even if it is artificially inflated numbers ;)

Standard Camp Chairs, Dance Pads, Hot Tubs etc....not profitable, lose your butt with them

SLP Camp Chairs profitable, People play the slots to increase chair pay out...in the long run house profits...and yes being on the Popular List draws new guests, who shop at the stores, play SLingo, play other Casino games or hang out.

The newer released chairs also can be set to be kept active by typing in a code...or it throws you out.

Lewis, you amaze me how often you go on about things you don't know a damn thing about...

Interesting, thanks Clarrice... I had no idea there were different types of camping chairs. The ones I've seen most don't appear to be linked to a slot machine, so I assumed most were like that. So, it sounds like I'm right in thinking that a casino with camping chairs doesn't lose money, since a lot of the profits campers receive go right back into the coffers. With the SLP camp chairs it sounds like that's even more true.

Casinos I don't care about but.....

If I TP into a shop that has these, they don't get my business. They lag the hell out of the shop, which by their nature is quite laggy to start with and life is too short to wait on everything to rez.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with your reasoning, I have consciously avoided using them, and patronising anywhere that has them, because I consider them pathetic.

I have seen Sims Online dying a slow painful death because of the "paying to be popular" mentality, and I don't want it happening in SL. At least there we had a successful "anti payout" movement going because enough of us cared about the problem, here it seems either most people use camping chairs or don't care about the damage they are doing.

I know of several builds that simply disappeared when dwell ended; some with camping chairs, some without. As others have mentioned, the desire to remain at the top of the 'popular places' list is strong. Last time I looked there were only two places on the 'popular places' list that aren't casinos and don't have camping options. Plus, yeah, the successful landowners know their clientele and provide plenty of ways for them to lose money as well as make it.
