Before i started inhabiting second life over a year and a half a go i was a resident of there.com in there we had the option to turn on a force field that stopped any and all pushes on your avatar. you would be able to via a UI check box turn it on or turn it off.
i think that as the second life community grows so shall the amount of greafing. my suggestion is that Linden Labs add default force field to the client that you can choose to turn on if you wish or choose to turn off if you wish to do combat i think that having it "part" of the client would be a good thing and turned on by default when a new user first logs on. i realises there are some user created force fields that you can attach but not all of them work well and you have to probably buy it if you even knew where to buy one. for the new user that gets pushed around on first landing this could be discouraging.
as for older more experienced users it would make things just a heck of a lot more convenient. we already wear a great many attachments and because of this most of us don't wear a force field all the time. or we forget to put it on
having a client option to turn on your force filed and keep it on with out the need of an attachment just seems to make a whole heck of a lot of sense

Yes. And while that's turned on, we can completely disable your right to run and script or rez any object in your vicinity. To keep you from busting the MEGA PUSH OF DOOM and not taking an hits yourself. No wonder they're considering charging for script runtime to combat this bullshit.

I am not sure i understand you Burke all i am asking for is an option to not allow unwanted pushes or or external forces to act upon my avatar with out my express permission. and to make it part of the client. to clarifie if your force field is on basically nothing could act on or push you avatar. I'm not sure i understand your comments on weather you feel this is a good thing or a bad thing that i am asking about?

I voted yes, although in a year of being a SL resident,i have never been griefed. I just think it would be a good idea to have a choice to accept a push script or not.

I already have such a force field. It's in the form of a half-meter plywood cube. P2

From: Peter Lameth i think hes refurring to the potential for abuse, ie u kill someone and not let anyone touch u? well if implamented it would be available to every one and if it were on by default then any one turning it off would knowingly make them selves able to be shot / pushed

Technical solutions to griefing are a waste of time. There are infinitely more ways to grief than there are technical means of preventing the same. Disincentives should instead be applied to make the thrill of griefing entirely outweighed by the resulting consequences.
And, as has been mentioned, it's pretty easy to sit on a cube and be perfectly safe from pushing as a result. Any default-enabled means of preventing push would confuse new users wanting to make use of existing content, like elevators, that are entirely peaceful in their pushing. Seems tedious and unnecessary. Parcel-specific throttles on maximum push velocity, on the other hand, I could deal with.

Absolutely. If you nerf everything a griefer can user to annoy you you'll end up with no scripting at all.

Sitting on a non physical prim is already a forcefield. Sitting on the ground doesn't work well, I recall doing that and still got pushed around by guns ... really mangled up the avatar too. T'was gnarly, dudes, gnarly.
Mentioning There, I remember people used to run over avies with their buggies. Glance over at the horizon and you'd see bodies flailing around in the sky. That was precious. I miss the ragdoll floppityness.

I'm a little tempted to start publishing scripts that illustrate exactly how annoying or disruptive one can be without pushes, but somehow I have this idea that they would be open to abuse.

From: Eboni Khan What in the blue hell are all you people doing that you need force fields and security scripts and all this other crap?!?!?!!?!? Seriously. i actually very very rarely ever do any thing related to guns or any of the like. i basically spend all my time building and designing clothing and do it on a private island and usually don't need any kind of force field. but every now and then you get some ass wipe with a gun that comes along and i go from hovering over a build or come back from ps to find my ave in a far corner of the sim. some people think its fun to just go around taking pot shots at any one they want to. of course IF and i stress IF the attack shows up in report pvp abuse, because it does'nt always, i do report them and ban them from all of my islands.
