The micro-hub effect. You may control a lot of sim traffic and not even realise it.

Forgive me if this is in the wrong spot, but I honestly had no idea where to put it.

It took me some time to notice, but apparently my business has been teleporting people in that never intended to go to it.

How?

I set a 'landing spot' for my land when P2P teleporting came out, and left it at that. Nothing insidious.

Well, I don't watch my mini-map much, but I began to see people appear at my landing spot, then leave. Why?

It took me a week or two to figure it out. My land touches the 128, 128 point in sim Alice, on 3 sides. The remaining quadrant is owned by one Ms Robin Linden.

What I suspect is happening is that people port to 'Alice' as opposed to a map destination. Since I mostly 'own' the 128,128 coordinate, I suppose, they come to my land. My land has a landing spot set, so people end up appearing in my courtyard where I've set the spot.

I was rather surprised that a modest amount of traffic comes through that way - maybe 5 or 10% of the total to my sim.

In the interests of total disclosure I thought I would tell everybody what happens in such a case. It's like having a micro-hub just for your sim.

I'm thinking of carving out a patch at 128,128 so it doesn't happen any more (not that anyone's complained).

I don't 'trap' people (in my case they land on open ground not far away at all) but people could easily put anyone teleporting into a sim just about anywhere they wanted.

Curious, yes?

•You should put a jail at 128,128 and see how many you can get in there at one time. Tell 'em it's a phonebooth and you're going for the record.

•And here I thought it was advantageous to buy a corner of a sim instead. Well, it is because it makes the coordinates easier to remember when moving stuff...

Drop an in inverted black sphere around the point and fill it with choir music and a bright white light. Spin multicolored full bright globes all through it.

When they 'port in, tell them they've died.

Oddly, I sense a connection somehow... something to do with happy customers and my 40 USD / month land tier.

So I'll not be trapping any of you, as fun as it might be.

Yet it would be curious to port people to 700m, smack into a detailed recreation of any well known place that is now long gone...

Ya know, before PTP was even implemented I pointed out that stuff like this is very good for a group of small businesses. Say a bunch of noobs put up shops near each other, they could share traffic to increase possible sales by having PTP landing points disabled on their land and share a landing point somewhere in the middle of them. So when one shop gets a visit from potential customers they all could get some extra potential customers because the customers will see themselves surrounded by little (hopefully interesting) shops carrying diffferent things. Basicly what I assume the telehubs were originally intended for before greedy land barons & mall owners got to them.

Just to add, whenever i come across a shop i like, if there are others nearby will check them out. I figure people being people, the chances of a good shop being next to a good shop are that much higher.

of course the reverse holds true, if i come upon a bad shop, i will NOT check out the others nearby.

/shrug, just me i guess....
