This is an interesting and very long windedly titled piece "Living in a Second Life: Core-curriculum English class gets massively multiplayer online role playing game makeover" about how SL is being utilised as a platform for education. Unfortunately the article contains no mention of sex or promises of riches (so evidently had nothing to do with LL's PR machine) but I guess it had to happen sometime! Imagine! SL has other purposes beyond fleecing and fucking!

Great to see SL being used like this.

For those just waking up...this link actually takes you to the second page of the article, but there's an easy link to the first page :-). I tried to copy the link for the first page, but it was about four lines long, so I ...didn't.

That's cool, and I'll think we'll be seeing even more of it. SL is such a wonderful, accessible, flexible platform/world/tool/thingy it has amazing potential for things like this. I'm hella keen on what it can do for those with disabilities/serious medical conditions and the like personally.

I don't see how teaching remedial English would be better in a world where the main method of communication is mis-typed SMS-speak (hi2u asl wtf bbq?), but I applaud the effort nevertheless.

Haven't read the article yet, but that's a long-assed subtitle.

I've been trying to figure out how to teach a class much like this one using SL. I'll have to look her up and pick her brain! :).

I'd actually like to see how they get a class like that to work.

I was going to do this last summer with a teacher education/writing class, but technology foiled my plans (bad graphics cards in computer labs). It'll be interesting to see an English class sustained over a whole semester, and student's level of addiction when they emerge (because now I teach college English...whoo). ;)

Well It'll be interesting to see how the students react to second life.

According to the poll on the website http://www.bsudailynews.com/poll/index.cfm?event=displayPollResults
12% of the readership are in favor of expelling students based on their sexuality.

That should make field trips an interesting eye opener for some.. :D
