Has anyone made any interfaces that allow any of the instant message clients to interact with SL? I very seldom have any IM clients running these days since I discovered SL, and a lot of my friends are starting to miss me.

Excellent, I look forward to it. Any idea which clients are being focused on?

Jabber servers are a bit resource demanding though. Something similar to skype might be a bit more scalable.

Sadly, the friends in question insist on using Y! and MSN. I would not install these programs on my computer if I was paid to, but I do use Trillian so I can communicate with them. However, when I have SL running, I don't like running anything else as my computer is not the greatest in the world.

well, you could tell your friends to create SL characters themselves, add then to your friends list and you can then send offline IMs to their email and they can reply to the Emailed IMs with answers. a little clunky, but it works for me to chat with hubby while I'm playing.

I would like to avoid email if I can.

Is there a beta of what is being worked on? I would be happy to be a beta tester.

Yeah. I made a plugin for doing name2key and stuff for the jive server and a java client a year ago that was connected with an in-world object via email and XML-RPC. It was pretty slow even though I was the only one using it. Doing stuff with libsecondlife would be quite a bit better though I guess, but the server still used much more system resources than I wanted it to It may be better now though, and maybe there's faster jabber servers out there.

What I really want is a plug in for a messanger or something so I can contact friends who are on SL when I can't be. My campus blocks some ports needed to run second life, and as I live in a dorm, it's a pain to not be able to get in contact with anybody, especially since I sell things.

SL <-> AIM

I saw an ad in a store for a SL <->AIM client. I don't remember the name of the store, but I bought Eata Kitty's Desert Eagles there so if you check her profile, the store should be in there-not the Novum location.
Hope that helps.
