I went into friends box, and there is no option to add a friend by just putting their name... only method I know is to actually see them and right click > add friend...

so how can I add someone without seing them?

It only takes a few seconds. Just either have her Offer Teleport to you, or you to her, and when you see her, friend her.

very minor inconvenience

I don't think it's a minor inconvenience at all. Trying to find someone who's not on your friends list can be a big hassle. You have to make arrangements ahead of time to be logged on to SL at the same time. Otherwise you have to endlessly keep looking them up and seeing if they're online when you are. I have several acquaintances from another forum who play SL. When they first sign up for SL they post at the forum and ask the rest of us for help. I can spend weeks or even months trying to catch these people in SL with no luck. However, if I could offer them friendship without having our avatars actually be near each other, I could easily see when they log on and find them.

It's to preserve a small modicum of privacy. You can only send/receive friend requests in person. The issue is that friends can track you while in SL, which most of us probably wouldn't want to occur with folks we don't know.

You can always send the person an IM via Find > Person and arrange a meeting.

You can just message the other person when they are offline and arrange a meeting time. Doesn't seem to hard to me. ***shrugs***

LOL here we are trying to argue how to STOP people from the ability to monitor when were online in other threads and now people want to be able to add friends without the other person's involment!

Maybe LL should give you full permission rights such as

"Allow others to add you as a friend without querry" y/n
"Allow all others to see your online status" y/n
"Allow all friends to see your online status" y/n
"Give friends warning when you log on/off" y/n
"Show as Offline to everyone , including freinds" y/n
"Show as Offline to all but the following list" y/n

then any player can decide what the heck they want.

NOOO that would be too COMPLICATED!
We cant have options! We are too stupid to handle options, and since every linden gets to pick what they do instead of having a manager with a clue cracking a whip behind them, nothing unglamorous like that will ever get done.

Well most messengers you dont actually have to be in front of a person to add them :S You can add anyone you want whether or not they choose accept , or reject you and block you is entirely up to them. So I really dont think that would affect privacy. But I kind of like the way you cant trade cards without being able to actually click on the other avatar.

Um, not to be too condescending, but surely if they're your RL friends, you can use Yahoo, or AOL or MSN or whatnot to arrange to meet them... or even, God(dess) forbid, pick up a telephone...

I thought it odd at first, but it makes sense to me now. If you have RL friends you want to meet up with, it's handy for each of you to just send an IM to the other as soon as you log on. If you each also reply to the IM, you'll find each other online eventually with a minimum of effort.

Also, I believe the default setting is for IMs to be passed on to your email if you're not in-game when you receive them. There've been plenty of occasions where I sent an offline friend an IM and they logged in a minute later because they got my email and thus knew I was on.
