Ok how many updates have we had now? We have flexi-prims and even lights, but there is one thing that you really think the Lindens would have fixed by now...

Why is there still a limit to the number of groups which a user can be a member of? I mean is there some reasonable explanation to why there was ever a limit on group membership to begin with?

I know Im not the only one out there who has had to leave groups in order to fit the 15 group per user limit. What im proposing here is that someone make a proposal to end group limits or at least come up with a draft proposal and I will post it. I really dont care either way as long as something gets done.

Recent Linden post implied they would raise this to 25.

Alright thats good but im asking why is there a limit at all? Just out of curiosity. I mean does being in too many groups cause lag or something? (<--Partial Sarcasm)

Sarcasm aside, it could. It's one of those "unforseen concequences" that is normaly missed. Here is how I think it could cause lag.

If the number of groups we can each have increases we will each have more groups (duh.) That also means that the number of people in the average group will go up. It's doubtful many people will say "I can have ten more groups, let me make those ten groups I've wanted." What they will say is "Let me *join* those ten existing groups I've wanted to add." That's what will make the average group size go up.

Why does that matter? Well, one of the purposes of groups is to send out mass messages. Someone IM's a group to anounce that SLingo is starting or whatever. The IM server takes that request and pushes it out to all the folks on the list. If the size of those lists gets bigger, the IM server has to start working harder. Possiably a lot harder. And since the IM server is one of those bits of shared infrustructure it working harder could impact the whole grid. As I recall one of the early greifer attacks was an "IM bomb" that brought the grid down throught the IM server.

So yea, being able to be in more groups could cause lag. Nuts, but true.
