Friend Mapping (Remove or Make Optional?)

At the most recent town hall meeting, Robin addressed the issue of map privacy by making the following statements:

From: someone

Robin Linden: so, first off, the most immediate change we'll be making is map privacy
Robin Linden: what that means is that when you're online, if a friend searches on your name, they won't be able to see where you are
Robin Linden: I know this only goes partway toward what you asked for, but it's a start
Does Linden Lab intend to remove this feature entirely? I think what most people wanted was the ablity to toggle this on and off, on a friend-by-friend basis, in the same manner as granting somebody mod rights on your items.

There are certainly some people I DO wish to be able to locate me. Will I still have this option?

We were hoping for options, not the loss of features :( It's the easy way out for programmers.

*sigh* Theres a difference between a Optional Abilty and the Removal of a Ability. I guess the lindens don't know that. :/

That's a problem with SL. The entire interface is simple and choppy. Things get added without optional user friendlyness. LL just wants everything to be easy to code. They don't care if its flexable to the users.

Take the friends list for instance. When we asked for it, all we got was a quick fix. a window with names on it. It isnt even sorted to allow us to view online before offline (most friends lists DO THAT). They just threw it together to make us quit yappin.

There is a workaround; the list is sorted by who's online when clicking the IM button. It's an extra click, but if I don't have time to scroll through my friend list, I do have some option.

It would seem a fairly trivial database and code change to make this functionality an option. If LL intends to remove it for now, and then make it an option at some point in the future ... I would recommend they leave it like it is until they can do it right. This is not an emergency need that has to be corrected with an oversimplified solution.

If LL removes mapping, I will be very upset.
There should be a checkmark, if they want to be mapped or not.
Because there are times when I want to be seen, and sometimes when I want privacy.
And of course if this is removed I will get the annoying
"where are you? where are you? TP ME!!1 OMG HURRIE PLZzzz"

PLEASE LL, keep it the way it is until you can make it optional!

The day Barnesworth can hide from me is the day I throw handfulls of drachmae into the sea and light the candle of doomsaying.

I'm hoping "no mapping" will be OPTIONAL.

I still enjoy stalking Khamon. Watching him fertilize seedlings when he's not looking has been VERY INTERESTING INDEED.

I think we should try to clarify this with LL. The comment does sound like they are turning it off, but it really seems unlikely that they'd remove the feature outright. But I've been wrong before. :-) Personally I think mapping is the least of the privacy concerns. The fact that we all have Superman like x-ray vision and can see through any wall is a lot worse than seeing some green dots on a map. :-)

Cheers,
Skip

Perhaps. But solving that problem is a lot more difficult. I this most of us would just like see them provide optional map privacy in an intelligent way rather than just just remove a very useful feature.

Hm. Most people in SL watch the fertilization of OTHER things.

:p

This is really going to cut into my hobby (while wearing a crown and scepter) of spontaneously teleporting on top of people and "knighting" them.

I thought this was my world, my imagination! Guess not if you've got a royalty kink. I am so tiering down and switching to basic and selling all my $L and taking up smoking.
