Hello, GaL - Welcome to Second Life!

Yes, people buy and sell lots of different things. A new resident should explore SL and get to know it, before trying to sell things. I think that at first it's best to play and experiment to see what you like to make. Do you like to build houses? Are you interested in clothing? Make things that you like. After you can do that, you might become a successful merchant. The first and most important thing is: create things in order to have fun creating. Anything else is a waste of... of life!

Hi GaL!
Well I sell furniture. Mainly because its what I started out doing it, I enjoyed it and think I'm good at it :) I don't make a HUGE amount, but I cover my SL rent/tier with a little pocket money left over.

But the main reason I do it is because I enjoy the actual making. Theres a lot of stuff that I DON'T enjoy about it too, like putting in animations, scripts etc, naming, pricing and lots more. Which I tend to try to put off for as long as possible :p. But I enjoy making it so much I put up with the rest :D

P.S. ^ (too many smileys)

I too enjoy making furniture and selling it. But the real money is in making skins, avatars, avatar mods, attachments, gadgets.

Furniture sells but nothing like what avatar related merchandise. I would go into the skin business if I could bear to use Photoshop longer than what I have to do for my dayjob. I just want to something different for my off-time. :-)

Good luck,

Troy
