The game crashed on me three times at first. Orientation Island would load and I could move the view around, but as soon as I tried to move the game would crash. I finally teleported, or something to help island 2, but I can't move there either. I can use the maps and the views, but I cannot move forward or even teleport off of the island.
I've tried the live help, but nobody will answer.
Oh, and after it crashes it says it cannot put me back where I was due to server problems.
Edit: One last thing, it says I have $0. I thought I was supposed to start with $250.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a network problem or something causing EXTREME lag.
When you are on the island and can get on, look near the top right of your screen (to the right of your $L amount), see the two bars?
If the one on the left side has anything in it, you're getting packet loss which means things are going to act very hokey. Talk to your ISP and ask if somethings wrong on their end.
If the one on the right is turning yellow or red, then the server is trying to push down more to you than your connection can handle. No solution to that one, really, except upgrade.

Thanks for any help. How fast is your computer? How much RAM? What is your Video Card? What kind of connection do you have? Alaos, from what I understand, you have to provide verification information to recieve the L$250. If you didn't offer any personal info, you start with L$0.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I'm not showing any packet loss. It's showing bandwidth at 78Kbps.
I'm running XP service pack 2. 256MB of RAM. Pentium 4 2.40 GHZ. It's a Dell with what I think is an integrated SoundMAX sound card and a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200.
Unfortunately I'm running dialup, but I get pretty stable connections around 46Kbps with no drops or signal loss issues.
My guy doesn't even try to move.... oh and I can't get it into third person view where I can see my own dude.
Thanks.

I knew ONE girl who ran on dialup for a while about 2 years back, and she could barely move... certainly not out of the sim she was in. Also, 256MB of RAM is way too small, you need at least 512MB, and preferably 1GB or more. The 5200 will work, but don't expect much. The dial-up is the biggie.

Second Life is not designed to work on dial-up. It needs more bandwidth than dial-up provides. Some people do report being able to run SL on dial-up but their descriptions of how it works sound much like your description of how it doesn't work. From the system requirements, http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.phpFrom: someone PC Minimum System Requirements:
Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL Operating System: Windows XP (Service Pack 2) OR Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) Computer Processor: 800MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better Computer Memory: 256MB or better Video/Graphics Card**: nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better
Mac Minimum System Requirements:
Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.9 or better Computer Processor: 1 GHz G4 or better Computer Memory: 512MB or better Video/Graphics Card**: nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better

That would be your problem.. sl is next to unusable on dialup. 300kbps is what the client is pushing on light usage, and it can easily max out my 3 meg cable on heavy days. Sorry

Thanks for the quick answers. I can now stop banging my head against the wall. I figured I would have problems, but I just thought it would lag and not completely die on me. Maybe I'll see you guys one of these days...

And you *must* get more RAM.. I'll wager that of you 256M, right after boot you're already using over 200M. Memory is cheap, and your computer will feel better than new if you go to 512 or 1G RAM. RAM is that important.
