There is an announcement about how attachments are borked somehow and turned off, but no mention of why or what the problem is and only a general idea of how long this will go on.
A search for "attachment(s)" gives only a zero response, sooo..
Since I have product announcements to make, maybe someone could post with what the problem is exactly?
And maybe a Linden could make a more informative announcement as to when this is being fixed???? Big hint - when posting a message about fixing a problem, it's always a good idea to begin by stating the problem. (communication 101)
Can't wait forever to post new products can we?

Hi Dianne. I'm sure you know this but there might be some folks who don't. Even though the attachments system might be down you can still post links to pictures. www.photobucket.com, and http://www.flickr.com/ are two popular places that will let you upload pictures to their site and enable you to show pictures in your ads while the forum attachement system is broken.

Everything Suzanne said, and also wanted to include www.imageshack.net in the list of free image hosting providers. Use of the IMG tags will allow you to display the image you want, by putting the URL of the image in between the IMG & /IMG tags.

I uh, don't want to stir up the hornets nest that happened the last time I mentioned this though but... I am one of those that thinks that it's really kind of bad form to link to places like SL Boutique etc. without also including an inline graphic so I won't be doing that. (and I know I am not totally alone in that opinion although it is probably old-fashioned "netiquette." That's why it's especially important to me to get the proper inline attachments working. I just don't understand what could possibly be wrong with the attachment thingie? The Linden post was vague, but it seemed to imply not that attachments were "broken" or impossible, but there was some kind of risk associated with them? Very odd indeed.

What is so difficult about including an inline image instead of an inline attachment? It makes zero difference. The impression I got from the announcement is that attachments are causing a performance problem for the forums, and they are looking for ways to address it. More info would be certainly helpful, but it is not the end of the world as you have plenty of other ways to put an image into your post. I imagine they will restore them as soon as they can.

A quick check of vBulletin boards doesn't seem to indicate a general problem with attachments in general - my guess is it has something to do with the file sizes of the images being attached. Maybe they're running out of room on the server and they're moving everything over to a bigger drive?

If you look down in new products you'll see you can post attachments. Looks like they turned it off here and said 'ooops we broke the attachment thingie' so folks wouldn't get in an uproar. Means for now I can't post the kitten pictures from work - but eh - I'll manage

For a while, the IMG tags within the forum were causing them to appear as text links, not in-line images. I've also seen problems with attachments lately, however, the IMG tags seem to be fixed. Let me test it on one of Dianne's products: Could I order one of them in RL for my dining room? Regards, -Flip

Regards, -Flip Well you can have anything I make for free. I did not want to use IMG tags as I did not want to put my images on some other weird server somewhere being paranoid and distrustful as I am. I had assumed that you did not want someone to link to a pic on SL Boutique though as I never saw anyone do that. Now that i know I can, problem solved! The few things I sell are always on SL Boutique anyway.
