Is there any way we can get a proper group announcements system set up. Preferably one that only officers or trusted individuals are allowed to use. Right now the number of emails that go like: From: someone Random Arsehole has proposed to vote in Second Life. Hay guys look at this awsem plywood cube I managed to build. This build is so new and awesom and you must all look at it which is why I'm filling your inbox with crap because I'm so important and there isn't nobody in this group that could possibly think I'm an insignificant little pleb who should be ignored whenever possible because I'm so great and I made this l33t plywood cube. Oh and I forgot to tell you where it was. is getting silly. I get less proper spam that I do this rubbish and I'm on the verge of configuring KMail to throw away all SL vote related messages. Just then I'll lose the legitimate ones too (both of them) What's everyone else' opinion on this anyway.

What's everyone else' opinion on this anyway. I agree that a much better group commincation system is needed, but I don't mind the votes, as its simply the people using the tools they have. This is a minor gripe compared to some of the bigger things I wish LL would get on the ball with: (1) FIX llGiveInventory already! (2) Remove Instant Message Caps / Inventory Pass caps when offline (3) Stop auto-declining inventory when in busy mode! ARGH! Regards, -Flip

From: Siggy Romulus And ragdoll titties. You want them to sag that badly?! Meanie!!! Yes, I quite agree. There is no need to use the vote system to get something accross. IM do save offline.. sometimes.. maybe.

Wanna know something that really pisses me off? I've seen live-helpers do it to the Live Help group.

From: FlipperPA Peregrine (1) FIX llGiveInventory already! Yes please. I don't think there can be too many threads where this is stated.

From: someone FIX llGiveInventory already! I've said this before in various ways, but I think that this is likely a symptom of an emergent system failure and is not only likely to be unfixable but should likely get worse so long as the current asset model remains in place. We know that the main asset server has been a bottleneck since forever; we also knew it didn't matter much with 40 sims and 400 players. We've also seen repeated Linden announcements over the last couple of weeks that the asset server keeps falling over. I conjecture that when writing the "let's get it out the door version" of SL 0.x, there was a tendency to assume that database writes would always succeed and therefore many of the places where you would check for a DB error return code were ignored. This is not wildly unreasonable, in C, printf(3) can return an error but most coders don't check it - for if stdout is hosed, so likely is your program. Similarly, if your database write returns ETOOBUSY or something like that, your recovery options are somewhat limited. However, this was all prior to pushing SL as a commerce platform; now there are how many database writes to check? How many tries should llGiveInventory make before giving up even if you try to re-run the write upon error return. If commerce was a design goal, L$ debits and the corresponding inventory writes would be atomic operations, either the whole transaction would complete or none of it would. Since LSL has segregated the money event and the llGiveInventory call, they cannot be made atomic. However, an error return from llGiveInventoryConfirmed() would go a long way toward helping new code do something reasonable on database failure. I have a fear though that the result of the llGiveInventory error indication may not be propgated back far enough to be of use. Good luck.

Yes, I quite agree. There is no need to use the vote system to get something accross. IM do save offline.. sometimes.. maybe. Yes. I'd just rather see groups have an announce facility and some control of what goes out through it. I don't mind receiving groups announcements, but some of them are just crap, spam, name calling and messages only ever intended for a small subset of the group (so just IM them already) Actually I may just investigate writing a mailing list manager. Watch this space.

Actually I may just investigate writing a mailing list manager. Watch this space. Sorry I derailed your thread, Lum, it was unintentional; however, I think all commentary on this thread is extremely useful and should be heeded. Not just for this topic, but all of them. Regards, -Flip

It would be nice if we could get a list of people in a group, even if it was a list available on the web and not inworld.
So you could get the list of members to use in making a mailing list.

This is a minor gripe compared to some of the bigger things I wish LL would get on the ball with: 4. llList2CSV/llCSV2List is broken, and has always been broken. 5. llSet/GetLinkTexture or llSet/GetLinkParams. 6. llGetInventoryDesc/llDetectedDesc or llKey2Desc 7. [x] Block 3rd party push on this land 8. Basic account dwell makes no sense 9. Let people change their names, once at least, even for a fee 10. Custom ground textures - I'd rather *pay* for a ground texture layer than see another plot covered in prim grass. 11. http://secondlife.com/account/instant-messages.html - offline chat 12. llSetAnimationOffset(key agent, vector off, rotation rot) 13. hardware Lighting, oh, they're fixing that one!
